[Ann] Yahoo! Acquires Konfabulator

Yahoo! Inc. on Monday will announce the acquisition of Konfabulator, a Macintosh and Windows application that allows users to run mini files known as Widgets on their desktop -- the same model used by Apple for its Dashboard application. Yahoo! company executives said they would also be giving Konfabulator away for free, completely doing away with the US$19.95 currently charged for the product.

Wow

I'm glad I didn't buy it

Although he could make no promises, Rose said he would also like to see a cross platform tool, so that you could convert Dashboard Widgets to Konfabulator Widgets.

that would be so cool. if it works, we wont have to wait for people to port the really obsucre dashboard widgets.

#303325

it sounds like there will be free Konfab for Mac only...

not sure tho

#303328

Well, since it's gonna be free it's time for me to dload it then. I'm all about freeeeeeeeee software :)

#303331

Man.... I know it sound way cool.. getting Konfab for free (+ refund for buyers in last too months), but forgive me for saying this... doesn't it sound bloody too good to be true?? ;)

Yahoo for Yahoo!

#303336

Best news I've had this week !!

#303337

What if Konfabulator somehow has ads in it? What if they change all the coding and xml and stuff?

What if they make every widget look like their site?

Why couldn't google buy Konfabulator.

#303339

Or even how much yahoo software you will have to install with the new versions ;)

#303340

Well this certinaly is a shocker!

I don`t know why would Yahoo do this and what will come out of this.

I guess we'll wait and see but i have mixed feelings about this. Anyone remember what happened to WinAmp after AOL bought it? :slant:

#303342

It's out now! Go get it! :D

#303391

They'll probably give it away free but bundle lots of spyware & bloated Yahoo apps with it......

Nope, I installed it... it's clean.

#303396

It's definitely clean...Google did the same thing with picasa, and there was nothing bad there. Don't know why you guys automatically assume the worst...the big companies aren't always out to get you.

I know I'm downloading my copy. :)

For some reason, I'm also worried

But like Unbeleiver said, this is a shocker. I couldn't believe it myself. I still can't...

#303596

I personally never liked anything Yahoo my biggest concern is if they decide to scrap it its done Arlo has no rights to it now.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but our beloved Microsoft is currently at war with Google (And Yahoo).

The next logical step in this soap would be Microsoft buying Stardock to give away DesktopX for free or even bundle it into Vista. (I am not exaggerating here.)

The widget idea has reached the major league.

The whole thing may perish in collateral damage while the behemoths fight it out.

In the past, I wouldn't dare saying a bad word against Pixoria, because in being a three-men enterprise, it was one of us.

Now that Konfab has been swallowed by a major, I state that the Konfab idea is too cool to be wasted in major league b*tchfight.

Even if it isn't today, it could be branded, ad'ed, spyware'd in the near future during the imminent clash.

Let's have an Open-Source version ASAP.

Probably not all the widget developers are satisfied with the move, lets give these a safe harbour, where our kind of Konfab isn't subdued to corporate arbitrariness.

#303664

I think this would be a good move. Well, at least for me. I love Konfabulator, but I don't like paying for things :P

The more free stuff, the better.
