thanks Kavin.... btw I like the name way better than Longhorn..... I wanna see some wallpaper OUTTHERE!!!!

#302633

I actually like the name, while I have no idea what it means, its better than using 20000000000000010 or whatever year it is released. Plus Longhorn is so old now, the name has been around since before xp's time.

#302636

IMO ,I think longhorn is better than Vista ( in my local language, it means rogue , fraud, and something bad)

#302637

Yea bad for you mac users, because its just gonna PWNZORS it... lol

#302638

I think they mean vista in the sense of a view... seems like a pretty abstract sort of name for an OS.

#302640

i like that name, longhorn was a terrible name imo.

#302641

It was obvious it wasn't going to be called Longhorn as final anyways wasn't it? Longhorn was only it's codename, Vista sounds pretty nice :)

#302642

vista is the perfect name for windows.

Vista is defined as "A distant view or prospect"

as things are being pulled from Longhorn, the prospect of anything new and exciting is most definitely distant

#302643

at least Vista doesn't make me think of cattle D:. anyway, in a reply to another article i read about this, someone wrote: "Widnows Vista = VI = 6 = WinNT 6" which i thought was interesting.

#302645

um. in my opinion, it is just as creative (bad sense) as longhorn. i don't like them as much. although it is a lot more creative :P.. microsoft is trying to increase the hype and relieve us of bordem and lack of enthusiasm with this refreshed name. nice try though. i'm still waiting

#302650

I like Longhorn more. Probably because of the keywords, 'long', and 'ho-- *gets shot*

#302652

I think Vista sounds better over Longhorn because, LH has been chewed/praised/hated/sworn/disected since so long that now anything else MS prefer to call it would sound fresh. Besides, a new name definitely raises the bar again.. helps getting more public attention, I would say it's rather a good publicity move.

Here is what Vista is all about :

vis·ta (noun)

  • scenic view
    a scenic or panoramic view

  • view through narrow opening
a view seen through a long narrow opening, for example, between rows of trees or buildings

  • mental picture
a view seen through a long narrow opening, for example, between rows of trees or buildings

I think so far the best names I liked from MS stable were, 1) Windows2000 Pro (I know number can sound really drab, but it was much better that absurd 95/98 and even ME) 2) Whistler (Project Codename for Windows XP), Don't know exactly why but I really liked that name.

#302653

The only "vista" i`ll ever see in connection to Windows is "Asta la vista" i plan to say to windows ASAP (in september :crosses fingers: )

#302655

LOL..... Unbe hits back !!!

I actually see a point... well I got Mac too, but too bad I'm not saying "Asta La Vista" to windows soon yet !!

#302656

the next version of windows from microsoft in 2008 will be codenamed: BOO CHA CHA. isn't that creative and exciting? :P

#302659

Yea bad for you mac users, because its just gonna PWNZORS it... lol

Who used MAC :P

#302661

hmm name is a little better....i doubt the OS will look any good though....and knowing Windows the new additions will be more resourse consumption and less stability

#302662

Finally! They had to change it... I mean in '06 would you buy an OS named after a COW or after a predatorial cat? :P

#302672

Longhorn was an awful name. It made people think of either cows, devil, or something related to sexual issues.

I don't like Vista either. It sounds weird for a version name of an OS. Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP, ...Vista?

I think It just sounds wrong.

Naming by version number or by release year may sound less cool, but it helps mortal understand what they're talking about. Something like "this app requires Windows Vista or later". Is my Windows Whatever a later version of Windows Vista?

I would like XP'06 or XP'07. XP is short enough, it has a very good reputation in comparison to previous Windows versions, it is very well known by almost anyone, and adding a version/year number next to it, will let the users know that the legend continues.

Going by Microsoft's reputation, do you REALLY expect them to get everything right in single release ??? (pun inteded)

Anyways, Personally I think XP was cool name.. maybe you are right, they should have continued something along the same line.. I mean cm'on.. how many bloody times you are going to change youe style... first 95, 98, 2000.. then NT, ME, XP.. and now LongHorn, Vista. I mean look at apple... learn something.

#302681

I actually might buy it this time.... LOL

#302682

Yea bad for you mac users, because its just gonna PWNZORS it... lol

I hope you were kidding. Longhorn(Vista) is basicly Windows XP with a pretty interface and some new little tricks.

They cut out everything that was going to make it a good OS and then they try to make it pretty to divege your attention away from the fact that it's just got a face lift.

The only worthwhile thing I've seen that can be of any value other than looking pretty is Avalon.

#302683

According to them, longhorn is completely new thing with many Blah...Blah..Blah..

According to me, i feel that they are going to cheat this time too..

(Like repacking the dlls of windows 2000 with all fixes, Attaching a new interface. as in case of XP)

Also windows is like a library.you can find some windows 3.1 icons inside, even in Longhorn's .. :P

Ooops sorry, vista's :P
