iPod murder

In a recent news, a kid was brutally stabbed by couple of thugs.. who snatched his iPod. There have been many iPod mugging incidents reported earlier, but this was really sad where someone lost his life over it.

Read full article here : Teen slain for his iPod

It was a sad news, shocking enough yet not really unexpected. The number of rise in iPod thefts somehow indicated that situation could go this bad too... but what was unexpected was, a guy called Steve Jobs (we all know who he is) personally calling a father of deceased. It's kind of behaviour which is rare from someone, specially who is corporate giant and almost a legend (his work is nothing short of extraordinary when you see elevation of apple's position in past few years).

Read it here : Apple's Steve Jobs calls family of teen killed for iPod

this is when i feel that they overdid it. it's possible to get away without any harm, but getting in a fight and killing the owner? that's absurd! it's proud to have an ipod, but it will give people trouble.

according to this short article: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2005/07/04/...l?oneclick=true

it stated that ipod crime is climbing, with over 50 ipod thefts that is simaler to this incident. are these guys really beggers that are so desperate for ipods that they would take a life? and, even for the most poorest people who earn 100 dollars a month they can get one if they are patient enough.

also reminds me of this article: http://www.liquidgeneration.com/rumormill/ipod_killing.html

if you earned 6 and 2/3 dollors everyday, you can get an ipod mini in a month. and, you can get a good ipod (with color and 20gb of hd space) if you earn only 10 US a day in a month. are these guys that impatient? idiot idiot idiot idiots!!

and, the second article is so touching.:(

I want an iPod, but not enough to kill someone. That's terrible.

#298651

^ What Ellada said.

#298657

Very moving that Steve Jobs did what he did, but if i look at it with a cold business heart - WHAT A GREAT MARKETING MOVE, Genius...

#298659

Seph is right.

Also i doubt he killed the kid to get the iPod. He took the iPod cause he knew he could sell it.

#298660

Unbe: If Jobs ever calls me, ill ask him for a mac for you ;)

#298661

ha seph, oh and that other story about the ipod stabbing, she hit him in the head 40 to 80 times with teh damn thing just because he erased 2000 songs of hers, i do feel sorry for the family, especially cause it was so stupid to kill him for it. if they want it so badly they could have just taken it rather than killing the kid

#298662

You people just don`t get it!

The thief probably couldn`t care less if it was an iPod or a Louis Vuitton bag - it`s the loot he was after.

iPod just made the kid a target cause of the white earbuds and the well known (high-ish) price of the device.

@Unbe : Thanks for editing title, I also felt it DID sounded kinda weired.. but left it unedited. :D

As far as the point goes... Unbe is right, those thugs didn't care much about iPod... those white earbuds are so well known. To them it was just a bloody loot, neither I believe they were out intending to kill someone... it's just that the kid must have protested (I know, I would have.. afterall there are many people who are attached to iPod for more reasons other than ubercool device) and they stabbed him to snatch his stuff. The thing sored and resulted in unfortunate death.

The point of sharing this with you is.. what Steve Jobs did. I mean like Seph said, "if i look at it with a cold business heart." Unfortunately, if you really look at it that point of way.. Steve could have simply said.. "Hey, what can we do.. the thugs wanted to steal something.. it was just coincident that it was iPod. Afterall people get killed everyday for various things to loot." Off course I haven't read about anyone asking apple to comment on perticular incident or asking Steve regarding it.

As a normal person and in my personal opinion I appreciate what Jobs did.. hence wanted to share it.

First is was your runners, then it was your mobile phone, now it's your IPod. Unfortunately these things are all visible & do make you a target. :(

#298680

Compactness - reason 4762817637482827 to get an iPod shuffle. :Pß

#298684

iPod Shuffle's are actually easier to steal. That's why people recommend a heavy lanyard.

@Seph and Unbe-- It was definitely a great business movie

@others--I've seen several articles about how the distinctive white headphones make people (especially subway riders, in NY, I believe) obvious targets.

That's good that he called the family. As far as the whole thing goes...that's just terrible. The people who murdered that poor kid should get the death penalty when they are caught.

#298722

this is why you should immediately replace the white headphones; white headphones=ipod for the taking...

#298739

As has been said, amazingly stupid thing to kill for, and a genius marketing move by Jobs.

This could all have been avoided if he'd gotten an iRiver or some other better-but-cheaper mp3 player out there. :P

#298740

Exactly - I havent done it because there is virtually no crime in Dubai... When i gave my Fiancee her iPod Mini, i gave it to her with some "regular walkman"-looking headphones because she was going to use it in the commute to university in the Tram (night trips as well)... It is rather obvious to me that, if you are going to be walking around with it, you should try and camouflage it as much as possible...

#298742

for me in hong kong, it's the oppossite. there are so much ipod owner wannabes in HK that people buy the ipod headphones for their iriver, ipod, walkman,cd players, md players, etc. :slant: and, there's ipod owners all over the place. you know, apple ipod emulation. trick the guys into thinking you have that gorgeous thing :)

#298746

What was a great marketing move ?

The link doesnt seem to work for me... :(

This whole thing sucks, why oh why cant

people get along....

#298747

That's a horrible thing to happen, and the families have my sympathy. I still think it's terrible that we've reached a point where we have to "camouflage" the fact that we've bought an expensive and quality item, and are wealthy enough to do so.

#298749

I herd about this yesterday, living so close to new york. i broke out my ipod at work and one of my co-workers told me all about it. thats so wrong. but if u think about it, there are also stories about people killing people of hightops. pritty messed up.

#298754

dood, im scared now, cause yesterday i was in the bathroom with these 4 kids, id say about 18-19 year olds, and i just happened to have my ipod :X

Not everyone wants to kill you and steal your iPod, RightTuShook (im not doing the funky capitalization, i hate that). I think you are Safe...

#298781

Gah. Whether it was the iPod or just the fact that it was a valuable item that inspired this crime, it's so terrible that this happened. I just don't understand it. How can you take someone's life over something you could make a little money off of. A human life for $300? And you're probably gonna get caught anyways, so it would be for nothing. It just frustrates me that people can become so jealous of other people that they would actually kill them. Sadly, that's the way it is, and iPod owners will have to disguise their iPods as much as possible. I still have headphones from my CD player. I just hope some people start to realize the difference in value between an iPod (or any other expensive item) and a ahuman life.
