troubles with uxtheme.dll

I downloaded Iceman's tweaked uxtheme.dll the other day, and loaded it into ...WINDOWS/system32...; overwriting the default file. Yet when I tried to load his AquaJaguar theme, I got the following message:

The theme could not load because one of the needed theme files could not be found. This can happen with themes that are not installed or authored correctly. You should verify that the wallpaper, screensaver, icons, sounds and other files are in the correct location

I tried re-starting my system and re-replacing the file several times, yet it still displays that same message. I have emailed Iceman about this, but it didn't get me anywhere. Has anyone else had this problem, and how did they solve it? All help is appreciated

OK...I've faced this exact same problem and the problem occours due to the way the files are extracted.....

This is the way the folders and files should be once you extract them...

The folder 4 individual .theme files should be extracted to C:\Windows\Themes\Resources (assuming that C:\ is where Windows is installed)

and the folder 'Iceman's Jaguar' (which contains the folders Aqua, Brushed etc...) should also be in that folder

Once this is done, double-click on each of the files which opens the theme in the Display Properties dialog box and then click on Apply (make sure that StyleXP is running)...it should then work

YES YES YES! IT WORKS! Well............almost. I can actually apply the themes now, but they don't apply themselves fully. I get the icons, cursors and sounds, but not the theme itself. Here's a screenshot of what I mean >> here

Here is an screenshot of the complete directory structure:

I suggest that you copy the zip file in your themes folder, then just click right and select Winzip->Extract to here

It will keep the right folder's order.

Oh how I hate Windows Nope, doing exactly what you said still gave my the same problem as in my second post. Does anyone have even the slightest idea of what could be causing this?

you probobly don't have the uxtheme.dll file patched correctly..

how exactly did you go about replacing it ?

if you're running XP (non SP1)

i can e-mail you a program that will patch the dll for you.

OK; here's exactly how I replaced it:

Firstly I tried to delete the old uxtheme.dll in ...WINDOWS/system32/ But I was unable to, as it was in use by the system. So I edited the file name so it was now "uxtheme.dll0" Windows no longer recognized this as a .dll file. I then copied the uxtheme.dll from the .zip I downloaded Iceman's site. I then pasted this into ...C/WINDOWS/system32/ I restarted my computer, and tried to apply the theme, but I got the problem explained in my second post.

This may seem wrong to you, but it was the most obvious way at the time

You might want to check if there is a uxtheme.dll in your dllcache. XP might be restoring it from that if it is there.

No Iceman, it appears to effect all themes.

You might want to check if there is a uxtheme.dll in your dllcache. XP might be restoring it from that if it is there.

Where exactly is my dllcache? I have thoroughly searched my PC and I just can't find it

it's in system32. You have to make sure you can see all hidden/system/protected files and folders in folder options.

Simon I have one last suggestion for you. Even though you can't seem to find dllcache, we'll see if Windows knows it is there. Place your moddified uxtheme.dll file in a folder, name it whatever, and place the folder in the Windows directory. So it is in c:\windows\"whatever folder name". Reboot your computer and press F8 while it is rebooting. You should get a screen with a bunch of boot option. Select "boot into safe mode with command prompt". Once in, change directory to the uxtheme file.

cd c:\windows\"whatever folder name" or

cd \windows\"whatever folder name"

once you are in that directory, type dir to make sure the file is really there. if it is, then let's try copying it to the dllcache. Type

copy uxtheme.dll \windows\system32\dllcache

If the dllcache exists, it should ask if you want to overwrite the existing file. Say yes, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and choose restart from the Shutdown menu and see what happens.

Nope Doing what you said flyakite, doesn't work. I tried doing it over and over again. It runs exactly as you said it would in Safe Mode; asking me whether I would like to replace the file. Yet it still comes out like I explained in my second post.

Well just for your information here's how to view the dllcache folder

1) Open My Computer

2) Goto Tools/Folder Options

3) Click on the View tab

4) You'll see a bunch of check boxes and radio buttons. Click on 'Show Hidden Files' and also clear the check box called 'Hide Protected Operating System Files (Recommended)'

5) As soon as you clear that check box, Windows will display a warning. Click on 'Yes'

6) Now Press 'OK' in the dialog box and you should be back in 'My Computer'

7) Now open windows\system32 and you should see a slightly transparent (hidden) folder called dllcache...You should replace the uxtheme.dll here...

Once you are done you can hide the system files again to prevent yourself from accidentally deleting any important system files...

Hope these instructions are clear enough...
