Lacie external HD + PowerBook problems? Common?

Has anyone experienced any technical issues when using an external Lacie HD [of any variety] with their PowerBook?

I first purcahsed a Lacie d2 [w/ Triple Interface] HD back in January. First, the FW800 connection failed after a week or two... The drive would no longer mount after being connected to the FW800 port.

Now, five months later, the HD is not mounting at all... It started all of two days ago. It simply just stopped mounting properly, out of nowhere. When I connect the drive, Disk Utility recognizes that the HD is connected, but it isn't mounted... and when I hit the Mount button within Disk Utility, it does nothing. I cannot verify or repair the HD either, since it isn't mounted, of course.

Has anyone had similar issues? I have no idea what I can do about the current problem, and I'm dreading calling tech support... +_+

Thanks...

have you tried hooking it up to any other systems, mac or pc? in other words, are you sure it's the drive and not your powerbook?

Not yet, I haven't had the chance to do so... But I will have a chance to try mounting it on another Mac sometime soon. We'll see how that goes.

good luck!

I used to have a similar issue with a PC notebook; It happened when I plugged several devices to the usb. LaCie Disks take a lot of energy from the usb 2.0 connection, and if there are several devices connected, the computer doesn't supply enought power, and it doesn't recognizes the unit. I don't know the wattage of your powerbook's power supply but it could be the problem...

Good luck!

If your drive still doesnt mount after trying in another computer, you could be facing the same problem i did with a maxtor drive. The cable got borked and had to change the enclosure

i had the same damn think happen, only thing different was that the drive tipped over onto my desk and the guys at lacie said that somethine was wrong with the drive

Well, it didn't mount on my friend's Mac. Same deal: shows up in Disk Utility, but doesn't mount.

I'm going to give Data Rescue X a spin to see what happens.

I called Lacie and they said the only options are running either DRX or another program [temporarily forgot the name], or to send it to a data recovery company.

All this nonsense for a less than 6 month old drive.

that's bull****, man. i always thought lacie was a quality product. guess not...

A quick search reveals that the drive has an internal raid-0 configuration. Seems to me that those drives would be twice as likely to fail as a single unstriped drive. Be careful with these large drives, buying an "unannounced" raid-0 rig is risky buisness, especially since many people use these drives for "safe" storage.

edit: oops, this model isn't an unnanounced raid-0, sorry. that's restricted to the big disk and bigger disk...

Yea, it's amazing to see the how many people have had the same problem if you do a Google search...

Doesn't make sense to me... And I should [theoretically] get some kind of refund since the damn thing is less than 6 months old...

Lacie disappointed me too - i once had a 1 TB drive from them (they asked me to isntall panther on it) and i was so disappointed to see that they are using Samsung drives (had bad experiences with them)

One would think that for the money you pay, you'd get top notch drives - guess not.

This is really insane, now that I think about it... In order for me to salvage everything from the hard drive, I need to get everything onto another drive, but I don't even have enough space for it all... [almost 200GB worth of stuff is on the Lacie.] That means I need to either buy another drive with enough space for it all for a temp transfer, or I'm gonna lost most of it.

Time to ***** to Lacie on the phone... +_+

EDIT: Yep, their 'limited' warranty doesn't cover this case... They say the hardware is not at fault because the computer still recognizes the HD, so I have to reformat [and find some way to back up whatever is still intact.]

Long story shirt, it's apparently my fault the drive became suddenly corrupt.

Now I need suggestions for another external HD...
