[Help]Searching the Forums

so, when I use the forum's search engine, what is it based on? Can I only search for words that appear in the thread, or is there any kind of meta tag work going on? Just wondering the most effective and efficient ways to search the forum.

It searches in the thread title and in the content of posts, basically

any possibility of users being able to tag their own posts with keywords without it showing on the post?

I dont really know the extents to searching capabilities, but was wondering if, with the system as it is, there might be a way for users that wanted to to add some search criteria that might not already be in their posts. I don't know how much of a help that would be, I'm just thinking out loud. or out... visible..as the case. may. be. I'm a werd nerd..

Well, we try implementing a tag based system [help] et al, but not everyone picks it up and we mods end up doing all the dirty job... Imagine what would be the case if people were allowed to add keywords to their threads a la deviantart...

Its not currently possible, and from my perspective, i dont see it being plausible..

fair enough. You guys do all the work, so you know how much extra work our requests entail, and whether or not meeting those requests ends up in total chaos. :) Keep up the good work.

Oh, and as long as we're in a search thread... I just tried the search "system files sp2" and it only searched "system files" because I guess sp2 was too short? My issue is, most people on the board use abbreviations, so I'm thinking not a lot of people are going to write out system pack 2.

No big though, just throwin it out there.

Ask an admin (I'm not sure if a mod could do it) to add your word (four character min-limit) to the search exception list. It's hard searching for filetype icons for the same reason (doc, xls...you get the idea).

You'll have to ask Timan, the Mods can't (methinks) edit the search preferences.

I can not change the character limit.

I thought you could add certain exceptions...there was a thread where Stevie and I discussed this.

Ah well, it's only an internet forum ;).
