Aqua-Soft ForumsI have a couple of questions about switching to a mac. Is it as easy to customize things as windows is? What I mean is, does the mac tend to make decisions for you (like automatically downloading things to the desktop when you click to open them) or can you customize a lot of things? Speaking about downloading to the desktop, can you change that or do you have to hold down ctrl so that you can have some control? (hah, that sounds funny). I have noticed that sometimes it seems that it makes up your mind for you, like when opening a new window in IE it brings up the homepage, and doesn't let you chose to open a new window with the same page that you were on. As far as programs that are compatable with the mac, does it happen a lot that you can't download or install something because you have a mac, or are things getting better so that it doesn't come up that much? Sorry to put so many questions out there, my only experience w/ a mac is my bf's, and he's pretty computer illiterate, I mean, I tend to solve his problems and I don't even have a mac, so he's not much help when it comes to answering questions. How easy is it to map a network drive to a Windows computer or server? I ask this because I will need to transfer files between my old PC and my new Mac: is it as easy in Windows, as mapping the drive (e.g. "computerc$") and dragging and dropping?
i like mac to, But not everything is perfect,
2 examples:
-for a server (it's better to use a UNIX server or windows server)
-games (you've got games, but not all games, the most are for the PC)
But Mac is a good machine, for design, technology, movie editting, .ect
A PC is more for games, office .ect, and a MAC for design.
My opionon is to have a MAC, because i'm a grapich designer,movie editor, webdesign, photographer and i'm just a apple fan.
OS X is more stabeliser then Windows. That's for sure.

There are more PC users then Mac users, that's true. The most use Msn Messenger 7.0. With Video chat. Well mac don't have video support for Msn messenger for mac to msn messenger for a pc. But video chat for yahoo messeger from Mac to PC is possible.
But with a other words. I'm using a PC but i'm also gonna switch to a Macintosh, because i'm tired of windows. The virusses, the errors .ect
I just wanna design without having stupid system errors.

well, if you want a windows server on a mac you could use a emulator, like Virtual PC or a other client, and then install a server there. i think that works

Networking under Tiger still seems a bit glitchy for me, I can see and access the files of my Mac on the PC but not vice versa for some reason. Seems like my Mac is a stubborn thing when it comes to communicating with the old PC. Tried al-sorts of ways to fix it, still not quite there. Someone suggested running an FTP server to transfer that way so maybe i'll attempt it that way.
-Although for those PC users, if you have an iPod, you can use that to transfer your files over. Or any NTFS formatted External drives you have stuff on can be used too, but read only, the Mac can't write back on to that (although, you shouldn't want to do that, but I am just saying).
Although: if you do switch, what will you do with those extra hours not taken up with modding the crap out of some aspect of your Machine?

Well, there's also Safari and Firefox (which are waaaaaaaaayyyy better than IE), but to open up a new page in IE with the same page that you were on you just hit Ctrl+N or, on a Mac, you do Command+N.
I'm thinking about switching to a back to mac now don't get me wrong windows are good but macs are better since I have 2 PCs and 2 Macs I only use the PCs but I think I'll go back to Macs!

Notice that things look better in other browsers than in IE? Please stop using that outdated piece of *** especially if you are intending on using it on the Mac *The Horror*xD. Things render sooo bad in IE. FF & Safari are the only things you will need on the Mac IMO.

Try this: Apple-k, then choose 'browse', navigate to the 'local' folder, your pc should be listed if it has a public folder on your network.
Works for me.
Hmmm..you guys have some points there. Like leroykok said, I'm gettin pretty darn sick of all of the error messages that I've been gettin w/ windows. Like just recently, my profile got corrupted somehow, which left me having the joy of switching everything over to a new profile. It's gotten to the point now where I've felt like I repair/do maintinence on my computer more than I use it. I've heard that about IE on the mac, and think that I would go w/ firefox if I switched. Does anyone know about the auto saving to the desktop? I'd have to say that has been one of my big annoyances using a mac. You guys have all put a lot of great input, hopefully I can get a good deal on a used g4 on ebay, seems like everyone is pretty anxious to upgrade to the g5. If only I had the money, i'd be typing this on a g5 right now...sigh. 
@Starburst, first things first....if you decide to make the switch, trust me you will not regret it! As far as downloading, files do not have to be downloaded to the desktop; however, if it is a disk image (.dmg) file it will open on the desktop. It is no big deal though, you just move the contents of the disk image to another folder 
As far as compatibility, the Mac can access just about everything a PC can with some exceptions; however, that is why I would recommend purchasing Virtual PC so that all of your bases are covered. Virtual PC allows you to run Windows on your Mac. It tends to run quite slow at times, but it really comes in handy when you need it.
For a web browser, you will love Safari. When I first got my Mac after being an IE user for so long, I thought that I would not like Safari. The browser really kicks ass!! In fact, Tiger does not even install IE (though, I can't remember if Panther did). I will have to admit that I have been having some problems lately with Safari and running streaming video, but I am sure that Apple will release some kind of update to correct Safari issues soon. But if all else fails, Firefox works perfectly fine.
@Cleanup, connecting both a PC and Mac is easy as hell! It is literally one click to enable windows sharing on your Mac, and on the PC all you would have to do is create a new network drive. I have had no problems accessing files from my PC to my Mac and vice versa.
I network with 2 other Winboxes in my network - no problems. I see their files, they see mine. I have a printer connected to my mac, and I share the printer on the network, again... no problems...
Things are downloaded by default to the desktop (but only when you click "download"), you can change this or you can ctrl-click (right click) a link and save item to a location of your choice (save as)
You do not have IE on tiger, they have dropped it - thank god for that.
If I use a Mac OS X-supported third-party Windows mouse, will the wheel and right-click work (as ctrl-click)?

If you have any expensive apps like Photoshop, call them up to "crossgrade" your software.
Thats a tip that saved me (litteraly) hundreds.
IDK about the whole Intel thing...its your call.

My only question is, when customising a mac, do you need a million apps like in windows, or is it all in one. (I hear something about shapeshifter...)
you basically need one app: shapeshifter, will change the entire appearance of most apps (depends on the guikit, and how many app skins it includes), and all the windows/mebubar etc, progress animations etc. It can also change your cursor, icons, and desktop.
However most people also get candybar (think of it like iconpackager only BETTER), which gives them more flexability when changing their icons, mix and match sets etc.
Also people might get pixadex which keeps your icons in libraries (iphoto but for icons).
Depending on how hardcore you are, you might also get transparent dock (some themes like niqu already skin the dock though), to theme your dock, or you might get Silk to change your system font, but all your *truly need* is shapeshifter (and candybar maybe).
Both are cheap, around 12or so dollars per app (maybe more for shapeshifter dont remember), and its impossible to bootleg it, so i suggest you buy it like i did and many others have too.
I just got a question, and i have no interest in making another pointless thread. coulple of questions for iBook.
1. is the screen enviorament aware? will it reduce light when the room is dark and increase brightness when enviorament is bright?
2. can i customize the keys? i found out that f12 is a Fn key and i want to swap the Fn and normal keys around. how can i do that?
3. is it powerfull enough to play original unreal tournament with high settings? default settings?
4. what media player should i use for avi, divx, xvid, and etc? also, is there a program that can do that be previewed on the dock?
5. another question about gaming. do i Have to use two button mouses? can i play unreal tournament original and warcraft 3 frozen throne and starcraft fine wtih a one button mouse?

If you want to use the same old version of either software I mentioned then go ahead, but your "internet finds" will be rendered useless on each update Not to mention that you will need to edit pslists/prevent the apps from phoning home....might as well just buy them, and support the small yet vibrant mac software community.
Mind you, I would never and never did support the PC software community But with macs, its somehow different.
