[question] Expired domain, now what?

I have a question regarding a domain name. Recently, my domain name which I primarily use for emails, expired.

When I went to renew the domain after it was expired, and was unable to do so through my web host's site. It didn't work. I emailed the host and they told me it was not registered through them. (Which is probably true).

Anyway, they said I have to register it with a comapny that charges $30 for a .net name. In my opinion, that price is absolutley ludacris, so I refuse to renew at that rate when others charge $8. Is there any way I can renew an expried domain name without going through the company I registered it with?

Are you sure it isn't $30 a year? Most of these domain name plans are per-year, or even 2 or 5 years.

I just looked at the domain company's wesbite to make sure my post was correct and It's $30 for one year. Many other sites charge $10 or even $7.

It shouldnt really matter where you purchase the domain name from - just use their system to type in the Domain Name Server Addresses and point it to your server.

So, I can transfer the domain name over to a different hosting provider, such as godaddy.com, that offers more comepetive rates?

Sure, use whoever the hell you want. The way this works is that these organizations are all given special permission to "edit" the worldwide database of domain names. Employing one does not mean you cannot use another after your contract expires.

My domain name has expired, although when I go to a more reasonable site, such as godaddy.com it claims the domain name is taken. So, do I have to transfer it or something?

I am very confused. My contract has expried. Someone mentioned a thrity day grace period before the domain goes public and someone else said that I could register the domain with whoever I want when my contract expires. Since, when I go to sites such as godaddy.net, it claims the domian is registered, even though it has expired. Can someone please explain this to me?

Some domain companies will keep the domain registered as a "cooling period" in which you have time to renew the domain, if you wish to switch domain providers, you can either wait out that period (usually one month after the contract has ended) or you can contact the company and request that they let it go, so you may use another provider.

Personally i use domainsnext.com, average price, great support/setup/managment, and it just plain WORKS.

Yea I have a similar problem currently.. The domain is in the "Grace" period, which means after 30 days of your expiration, it will be released back to the public.

You can either:

1) renew the domain now, before it gets released back to public (but you need to renew from the same company)

2) wait until it's released, and choose your own domain registration company to register it again
