My Experience With Linux

Its not that easy. GNOME has LOADS of dependancies, and the only concievable way to get all those dependancies is to run this FINK, which is looking really cool. It makes a Disk image so it runs the system in a sandbox (though natively), and it uses (like I told you about in the other thread) apt-get, to handle packages. This is the best system, because it stops dependancy problems by automatically downloading and installing all dependancies (damn im jealous. Slackware cant do that).

You have to know a little of the linux commands though, but it should be fine. They are having you use PICO, which is the easiest Cli Text Editor I have seen, the commands are right on screen.

So did you actually get FINK working and couldnt get GNOME, or what? I might be able to help you, and im anxious to see how good this FINK is.

Oh yeah contrasura you mentioned cygwin, I like cygwin a lot and it's x11 works pretty good on my system and I didn't notice any speed hit.

Although I don't use it very often as I prefer native apps over something running in a windowed environment (meaning a desktop inside another window) such as that though there is a cygwin X with "rootless" mode (like the OSX xservers, or the other commercial windows Xservers) I haven't tried it yet.

Call me crazy but I kinda feel like it's installing a 5th wheel on a car. I mostly use cygwin for it's command line tools which I actually have a use for.

I am installing Mandrake completely on my fourth PC and I completely erased everything that was already on it. I didnt really use that computer, so it was ok.

Anyway, I reset the BIOS using a DOS technique. Now hopefully I'll have Mandrake up and running in a few minutes!!

By the way, when it asks me about the graphics card and all, what should I select? Is there an auto-detect feature if I dont know what my gfx card and Hz and refresh rate etc.. are?

Taha I have installed mandrake on my computer before and it should automatically detect and use your video card provided the drivers are included with the distro. Most major brands are.

k... I'm having a little problem..

Installation and all went fine, but it doesn't start up Gnome/KDE/.. I have to press ctrl+alt+F2 to go to console, log in as root then enter gdm. THEN gnome starts.. Otherwise the screen just keeps flickering.. Anyway to solve that? Perhaps its a gfx card problem?

Also, how do I auto-detect the gfx card? I just chose 4MB to be on the safe side. What happens if I choose something higher than the actual thing? The problem is I dont know what gfx card it is...

Anyway... its great running Linux on a high resolution (no more 800x600 on VPC!! Hooraah!) and its MUCH faster than windows IMO.

Try changing your inittab to 4. Go into /etc/inittab and youll see Runlevel:(some#): , at the top of the file. Change that number to 4, and GDM or KDM(whatever you default is) should automatically start.

But first, if it will be GDM, Make sure you gave your user permission to log in using it. In Kuser, add your user to the GDM group (you must be root I think to do this).

It shouldnt be a problem having your memory set too high. Id just remove that entry all together in the XF86Config file (or just # it off), I dont have my memory listed, and my computer plays UT2003 just fine.

Hey, edit buttons gone.

In your etc/inittab , you should have this: id:(#):initdefault: , change that 4.

To change your Display Manager, go into /etc/rc.d/rc.4 , and # out the one you dont want , and un# the one you do.

anyways... yea im on mandrake right now.. and i just hooked up my webcam and to my amazment.. it just configured it by it self and it works!!!!!!!!!!!!!

easier then windows lol!! i had to install software on windows for it to work.. linux i didnt touch anything and it just worked..

i think you should try and use mandrakes own display manager for login, its very pretty and much like the osx one from what i've seen.

You can't login as root, but then you shouldn't really do that anyway?

I just realised i cant log in as root.. oh well... ill just use console for that.. but you know what scared the crap out of me.. i had some movies on linux in kde 3.1 just now.. and out of no where i hear the sound of one them im im like what the hell?!?!?! i have nothing open... and thjen i just realised when you put ypour mouse over media files it previews the sound.. lol! that scared me at first.. its a neat feature

You can login as root, you just have to create a user login for it. I did on Mandrake 9.1 here on my laptop. by the way, Mandrake autodetected everythign, everything runs perfect from my SonyVaio Laptop (3rd boot). Only thing I need help on (Help contrasutra or others, is with my wireless nick. Since it wasnt in the slot when I installed Mandrake, it didnt get configured.

I did get the hermes.conf file and I get the 2 good beeps they say im supposed to get when the driver works on boot, so I am good there.

Added the hermes.conf to /etc/pcmcia and got the two beeps right off the bat.

Now where do i set parameters that I use in windows to talk to the access point, and in what form to type it? here are the things I need to add to access my Access Point:

Authentication: Use shared key

Channel:6

Encryption: 128 bit

Fragmentation: 2432

Max Listen:3

Network: Infrastructure

Preamble: Long Tx Preamble

RTS:2432

SSID:556677

Transmit: Auto

Passphrase: 112233

Where do i add this info to, and what exactly do I type to add (if to iwconfig)?

Or do I not need to add this info?

All of Linux has Bluetooth support (its in the kernel), get the BlueZ Modules. I couldnt tell you how to set it up, as I have no bluetooth

You can login as root in Mandrake, just Go into the login Options, and check off the option for allowing root to login. I cant tell you where it is exactly, I dont have Mandrake, but I know its there.

Mandrake uses KDM as its display manager, it just pasted its name on it.

I dont really run any DM any more though, because they are ALWAYS running in the background, and it takes up like 10MB of RAM. I dont want to use all that, just for a pretty login screen.

I have no idea how to make an OSX greeter, but it could probobly made into an XP one pretty easily.
