[help] mapping to windows shares

okay, i'm at work. i got a powerbook g4 running 10.3.9. our domain has a mix of w2k, wxp and w2k3. i've got a test environment set up where i've got a shared folder called 'share' on one each of these boxes. i open finder and go to network. i browse to the w2k box and click connect. i authenticate and all is well. if however, i browse to the wxp box or w2k3 box and click connect, i authenticate and am then presented with a dialog:

The alias "NAME-OF-BOX" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.

the test boxes i'm using are like this...w2k box is sp4 and has no apple protocols installed. wxp is sp2, firewall disabled, no apple protocols. w2k3 is sp1, appletalk and services for apple installed.

so basically, anything wxp and above is giving me trouble. i'm sure it's a simple setting somewhere, yes? can anyone advise?

I've had a few issues with XP and OS X lately. It's not XP or Win2k3, it's OS X.

Apple is relying on older Lan Man info which is disabled in SP2 and Win2k3

Have you tried connecting manulay instead of browsing?

use SMB://(XP box's IP)/SHARE

thx rj. yeah, i've tried the smb path. on the w2k3 side i get a userid/pw error and on the xp side i get

The Finder could not complete the operation because some data in"smb://box/share" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).

hmmm...is there a way to enable lan manager, or is it just plain gone?

(and ya know, all this is cuz of one freakin' user with a powerbook. don't get me wrong, i love my powerbook, but i don't rely on it for work. this other guy does. mebbe i should just kick his ass...)

You can re-enable the older Lan man keys via a policy tweak...

Be aware that option 14 will pretty much kill security on your box.
