Contest ideas

Don't ask why i should be the one to start this thread, but i thought someone should. :D

Ok, it seems that Timan would really like some feedback from us all, on what we should be doing in terms of this contest, so i thought i'd start this on behalf of Timan and the "contest" (it needs a name to).

Well let's start this thread and get the wole thing moving a bit, with a little bit of "market research".

What we need to know is:

  • Do you want a contest?

  • What do you want the conteset to be about? (widgets are the favourite so far - Mac + Windows)

  • What kind of prizes do you want?

  • How should the winner be decided?

Post your ideas, and post any other questions that need to be answered to.

A contest would be a good idea I think, and would create more of a community spirit in the forums. Widgets sounds good, but it could be something bigger, say a WindowBlinds skin or an RK Launcher theme (a new application, even). Prizes wouldn't have to be anything major - perhaps a license for Konfabulator. And the winners could be decided in a raffle, or by community vote.

Just my thoughts - Aqua-Soft Tag Team Wrestling Championships, perhaps? I'm sure Mau would enter, the kinky mofo

#288708

If Mau's in, i`m in!

Also i`m sure NC wouldn`t mind wrestling with a Harry Potter look-a-like, ay Simon? ;)

#288710

Yes, a contest is indeed a good idea.

Any kind of skin / theme / widget /iconset / wallpaper would be fine as an entry as far as I am concerned, with the winner to be decided by votes from the Aquasoft staff

How about a month's subscription to DA being up for grabs ? That would be cool and not too expensive I guess !

I'm sorry, I'm just having flashbacks to NC's wedding night and Hermione and mud wrestling @@_

I like it! :D

we could start with a contest to gather good ideas for contests... a meta-contest that's it :)

#288716

  • Do you want a contest? - Yes! A contest would be great to tighten the sense of community, as well as attract new members and maybe get a few of us off our lazy asses and do something :P
  • What do you want the conteset to be about? (widgets are the favourite so far - Mac + Windows) - Widgets would probably be the best bet here, seeing as they're cross platform, and not terribly time consuming to do.

  • What kind of prizes do you want? - Really I think anything would be fine, as long as it's cross platform (I know Timan has DesktopX licenses to give out, maybe that could be the prize for the Windows winner?)

  • How should the winner be decided? - Ok, first off we should separate it into two divisions: Mac and Windows. Now comes the hard part: should every member vote for a winner or only staff? Not everyone has a Mac here, in fact probably most people don't. So it's going to be hard to 'vote' for a Mac entry when you can't even test the entry :slant:. Voting should definitely be part of how we choose the winner, but I'm not sure if it should be staff only or community open...

Also, can people enter as a group?

My 2 cents.

Haha, you were quite active in that mud wrestling, if I recall. Almost lost your wand that night too...some hot young girl wanted to "borrow" it.

Is that what you call it? :o

Dirty, lil mofo :P

Reason I believe widgets are perfect, because I have 3 desktopx pro licenses to give away.

#288746

Which widget engine(s)?

I'd suggest the following rules:

a.

limiting it to the usual suspects:

Konfab, AveDesk including SysStats, Kapsules, DesktopX?

b.

Not submitted anywhere else before

c.

separate categories, no double prizes, for:

1. derivative work of an existing widget (e.g. images replaced)

2. highest voted (forum poll)

3. most innovative

d.

1+3 be elected by a jury consisting of (insert names here)

#288763

well as far as i can see there is a slight problem with prizes.

from what i understand, there are 3 DX licences in prize fund. that means that we don`t even have enough prizes to cover all the widget apps :slant:

I like the ideas of separate categories with no "prizes" persay. But can we please also have Dashboard as a category?

#288786

I think that staff-only voting should be completely out of the question, because then it would hardly be a forum contest.

#288826

I think we should have a contest about how a bunch of people can flame each other in a way that makes readers laugh :D

#288854

hobbes i think you just started the contest with that post, ready to be flamed ;)

#288856

Aww no dashboard section? what about all the mac mofos *that count* like Timmy/Pe8er/me/Rick/and many many others?

About the prize, I wouldnt mind a subscription to DA or a gift certificate to itunes music store.

#288867

Ooh, iTunes Music Store does sound good.

Timmeh hates his Mac. We all know that :P.

But he still has one, jelous? :P go back to fanfic reading you mofo

I meant: you can submit one widget for your engine of choice and the three prizes will be given to the three category winners - nobody can win more than one prize.

Dashboard is OK by me, but we should say before the contest starts what engines are allowed.

So that if someone comes up with a new engine while the contest is running, no hearts are broken...

I daresay we should also limit the platforms to Win and Mac - sorry Linux has no decent widgetery yet.

#289001

Well this would kinda suck cause not all of us have some kind of coding knowledge and we cant participate :(

However anyone can come and flame :D

#289018

Hey, I think maybe it would be a fun idea to have the "thank you" system as the voting system. Whoever gets most thanks wins, that kinda thing?

#289063

Or a points system...

5 points for your favourite

3 for youe next

1 for your 3rd

#289087

Well, if Tim allows to enter in groups, then each "group" can have graphic desginers and coders, that sort of thing.

#289090

How about this, since there are so many widget engines, why not just break them down into OS's?

One category for Mac and the other category for Win.

Pretty fair? This way widget developers can use their OS and engine of choice.

...I have 3 desktopx pro licenses to give away...

Like anyone would want those! :P

With avedesk and the rest, who needs desktopx? ;)
