NITRO: CMD + SHIFT + 3 will take a screenshot of your desktop in PNG format. Snapshooter is great for making previews though. 
thx gnomexp lotsa new shortcuts to learn but as u say it does make the preview easy! just if we could stop it showing "snapshooter" and show the normal finder! but hey i being greedy in first few days!
Well.... you just use that shortcut (IT WILL APPEAR AS FINDER), and then open shapshooter. Drag your image in, and woila!
