Yesterday, France said NO to EU Constitution.
Lots of people voted (70%) and NO won with 55%.
It's bad news for EU...
In fact, french people didn't vote about Europe but about french policy. And about other thinks which had little thing to do with the constitution. A about lots of wrong things too.
What a waste.
Not a waste, although its a setback-a large one at that-there is still hope for a more cooperative EU. I've been reading LeFigaro online, and basically it says that the vote was more of influcenced by people's opinion of the French Government (which vehemently supported a YES) so they did the opposite and voted NO. Well thats one theory anyways.
You have to see all the hurdles that the EU has passed, the euro (huge step) and the opening of the borders, both are things to be celebrated still. Personally if I were a French citizen I would've voted NO, as soverignty has always been historically important for the French (being invaded twice etc), not to mention that what's good for France is not necesarily good for Poland (no offense meant), the range of EU member states is too large...perhaps that was a factor.
Anywho, its not bad news, the EU wont dismantle just because of this, it simply means that a constitution wont be signed in...for now at least.
I guess no one, including me, bothered to read those 500 pages of legalese gibberish - but I heard you'd need to be a lawyer to understand it. I mean, it's supposed to be a constitution with less than 100 memorable phrases like: "We, the people...", "..consider these truths to be self evident..." and so on.
In Germany and Italy, people aren't even asked; the government constitutes itself which is plain "illegal".
