Anti-Aliasing in Photoshop

Hi pretty boys

ok. so i started this topic off on the wrong foot. point is, i still need your help. pretty self explanatory topic, but well, I'm really having trouble figure out how to anti-aliase on photoshop. text is easy enough, but then theres edges, like the ones you can see in my avatar. those are pretty damn rough. anyways, i can't find a decent source on how to do it properly, and importantly, quickly. if any of you guys could share your knowledge or even plug-ins if you have them, i'd really appreciate it!

Everything in photoshop that can be antialiased, has a tickbox for it. Just like your avatar, a rounded rectangle. When you select a tool, such as a rectangle, there will be a tickbox in the top of the screen, in the tool's properties, that says 'antialias'. Same as in layer styles (shadows, glows, bevels etc), all has options to turn antialias on or off. Just keep in mind, for a rectangle, once you've drawn it, you can't turn it on/off, you need to make sure you've ticked the antialias before you draw it.

Use the shape or pen tool. For simple shapes (like the rounded rectangle in your sig) use the rounded rectangle shape. Or you can draw the shape if you ant, then use the convert tool to change an anchor to a vector point and you can make curves. Basically the three things you need to know about is the shape tool, pen tool and convert tool.

Any time you make a shape in Photoshop from one of the preset shapes or custom shape tool, the resulting product is a vector and is already antialiased. When you use the brush tool, the brush draws and smooths on its own. I'm not even sure how you made your avatar without it being antialiased.

The only time you'll run into something that's not antialiased is if you use the pencil tool or disable font filters (ie. set it to "None").

1. ctrl-click the layer.

2. goto select>feather

3. shift-ctrl-i

4 delete, then ctrl-d

hey guys. thanks for the hints!

i cant seem to find the antialiase button for the shapes at all. i can do the feather thing, and i can see the antialiase button for bevels etc. just not for shapes etc. can someone please help? i'm using photoshop CS. thanks again!

The shapes should do it automatically. If you zoom in, you can see a thin line that outlines the vector (this will not show up when you save it), but then you can see the pixels and they fade out (noticeable on a curve). I don't have CS to help you out with, but I assume that this has not changed.
