[help] Using labels on top of desklets/icons?

I've recently switched from ObjectDock to RKLauncher, which creates a new problem for me. I previously used OD's "flyout" menu to hold links for all of my games--which hooked into a batch program that shuts all unnecessary apps down before launching the game, then reloads them afterwards. Without OD, I wanted to use AveDesk to do it. Here's where my idea--and problem--arises.

My idea was to have a launch panel of sorts--a vertical menu-type panel of links, one for each game. I don't know how to write my own desklets, so I decided to try and find another way. It's possible to make single images for each link in the 'menu,' then place them all as separate pidl shortcuts and "piece" them together, but that still leaves the problem of labels. I discovered that the use of negative margins results in a label that writes itself over the icon, but as soon as I click "Okay" to exit the properties dialog, the label transplants itself beneath the icon, which is exactly where I don't want it to be.

My question is this: is there a way to force the label to stay atop the icon? If not, is there a desklet/program that performs a similar function to what I've described?
