PS3 using PowerPC processor?

PowerPC-base core? Does that mean it could run Mac OS X (You would need an HDD and a bit of messing around with it)

If it could run Mac OS X, I'm getting one...

Now tell me how wrong I am...

all i know is that apple works with sony on the new playstation.

i don't know fot the cpu but i've read somewhere that ps3 will support ipod :)

#283571

An HDD will be shipped with the console AFAIK ;)

#283574

I don't think you can run MacOS on a PS3, the Cell-cores are PowerPC-based, but they've got a different structur. But after some patches, then it might handle the new CPU :-). I had an article about the Cells, but I can't find it at the moment :-(

edit: here's a picture of its architecture http://www.blachford.info/computer/Cells/Cell_Arch.gif

but there's another rumor: Cell could be something like the new "G6", so you can run MacOS 10.6 or 11 on it and if you're lucky the publish updates for older versions, but I don't think so.

@donnie

You're thinking of the XBox360. That's supposed to have iPod support.

let's clear up something.

Cell is a Mac OSX compatible CPU as much as a P3/P4 is.

Even Xbox 360 that uses a Power4 derivate is a much, much simpler CPU than a G5 and chances are slim to none that is will be able to run OSX.

Even though both PS3 and Xbox 360 boast 3.2Ghz clock speeds, in reality they are much simpler cores and are at MOST equivalent to a 1.6 G5 (even though it would be like comparing PowerPC/x86 architecture).

Bottom line, much simpler, specific task optimized cores that are too different from the G5 to run OSX.

mmkay...

Duyvan, what does AFAIK stand for? It's been bugging me for a while...

Also, as we know Sony have released some pictures and information on the PS3, but do we know if this is going to be the final design, or do you think they might change it?

what does AFAIK stand for?

As Far As I Know..... AFAIK.

just b/c cell is based on powerpc doesn't mean it is a powerpc ;)

anyways i thought cell had 8 cores?

let's clear up something.

Cell is a Mac OSX compatible CPU as much as a P3/P4 is.

The MacOS 10.4 kernel Darwin does run on Intel CPUs but some other parts of the system don't.

#285579

the PS3 uses the Cell processor, which has one PowerPC-variant core and 7 secondary cores (that don't resemble PowerPCs at all). Asides from the main core, everything is as close to a PowerMac as a Dell computer is :P

more or less the same goes for the XBOX360... which runs 3 custom PowerPC chips (some instructions added), but the rest is all so different from a regular computer (PC/Mac) arch that i doubt anything without some heavy patching could work.

somebody give this man a cigar :slant:

i can't wait any longer about this question. why is everybody starting to use power pc ibm processors? first apple, and then everybody else? why not use g4 processors for the consoles?

#285595

less heat, better efficiency per cycle, more advanced tech than x86....

should i go on? ;)

G4 is a PowerPC CPU as well... just an older version. Most were made by Motorola, all the newer G4's are made by IBM. After all... IBM owns the PowerPC technology anyway.

And as Unbe said... it's better suited to perform the processing requirements of a high end gaming console than an x86 based CPU.

#285609

Oh. thanks for the info. is the Cell patented? can other companies make it too? x86 isn't copyrighted is it?

#287902

Cell is patented

x86 is a part of a consortium, just like PowerPC
