I was curious if having 2 512mb sticks of a different brands (same size, speed etc) would work or not. I couldn't see any reason that they wouldn't so I already ordered them =/

They(2 diff. brands of RAM) worked on my PC.
Theres this common misconception that ram sticks have to match each other,
thats not true. Ive stuck mixed up ram sticks in my PC zillions of times and it
always works.
i have different brand ram on my mac - to exemplify that even the ram-picky G5's can have it
I have done it loads of times on PC's too; you only have to make sure they are exact if you want to take advantage of the dual channel.
As long as they are the same speeds its fine.
As long as they have the same specs .. ie speed they should be fine 
Unless you plan to massively overclock your computer

1. you don't need to match them in speeds. if they're different, the faster one will downclock to match the slower one.
2. the reason people suggest not mixing brands is because of compatibility issues. sometimes ram from different companies don't get along.

Totally agreed. This is completely in tune with my experiances regarding different brand memory in one (x86) pc-system. It used to cause serious issue's with brand pc's like Dell, IBM & Compaq, which were very keen on specifec memory brands. No more. Luckely.
Even different speeds will work, but both will run at the lowest speed.
For example, if you have 1 PC3200 512 stick and 1 PC2700 stick, both sticks will run @ 2700
As far as I know this has always been the case, even with running PC133 and PC66 DIMMs
I just get whatever's cheaper, regardless of the brand
