Aqua-Soft ForumsHeres the prob: My computer boots up FAST, like 7 seconds but at 8 seconds when my desktop is up if I go to "My computer" that little searchlight comes out like its searching for devices.Then all my view settings are changed. Also I cant start my PPPoE connection (DSL). I have to waight 90 sec. to go to my computer or use my dsl. I have a wireless connection and the best thing I can think of is its trying to see the other computers. I think it times out at 90 seconds. If anyone agrees that this is what its doing does anyone know where know if and where to change the setting?

I just got another 512 stick of ram. I saw instant results. Im gonna buy another 512 stick so I can rip my music CD's completely to ram using Audiocatilyst. But please I would like technical replies. The problem starts after I set up my Wireless network. Thats why I think thats the prob.

ram will hide your problems.
my laptop when it had 64 ram booted xp in 35 seconds, which is comparable to boot ups of some people with 256 ram.
Adding 256 brought the time down to about 13 seconds (slow4200 rpm drive)
Just disable all external startup programs (icq, messenger, office) that load with your pc, leave only what is absolutely neccesary.
(in my case only my mouse and my adsl modem)
I dont see how a gigabyte of memory is neccesary for simple websurfing and counterstrike. whats wrong with 512, hell "even" 320? Nothing if you tune your system right.
If I were you I would disable unused ide channels on your pc, as the bootup takes time to look for channels that aren't there. Then simply uninstall your wireless, delete all registry, inf, inf/other and driver references, then reinstall clean.
UNLESS you can find a setting within the wireless adapter properties that either:
a. doesnt look for other computers, or
b. Set a timeout for looking for other computers to 0.

No, the ram has nothing to do with the prob. I was just talkin about that to show off a little. 
The 90 second wait happens no matter how much ram I have.
Your problem is when you go into My Computer, it scans all your drives. The Hard drives wont slow it down that much, but the CDROM drives will, CDrom drives are like 10x slower than HDs, and if you have one of those 40Xers, they take like 5 seconds just to speed up (jet engine, I have one).

No, it still tries to scan it.
Do you have DMA enabled on your Hard drive? That will slow it down a lot.
do you have networks drives mapped?
That may take loads of time cause they get connected at boot (i think)
are you using a linksys router?
this happens on my laptop too...
i assumed that it was just because 98 is slow...
i got a "wireless g", never had any experience w/ wireless before though...
sometimes the other computers on the network can see the laptop before it can see them... if i access the laptop from another comp, it works right away...

It is a linksys wireless USB adapter. No network drives are mapped. I saw that slowdown problem also. I use the shared drives so little I unmapped them. I do link to one of them in Y's dock. It doesnt seem to look for it untill I wanna use it.
