[help] excessive HD noise

Whenever I bring up a rightclick menu or a startup/toolbar menu, my hard drive makes excessive noise.

This also happens when I am playing a file in windows media player/quicktime/itunes. While the player is running, it is making a buzzing noise similar to what I encounter with the menu.

It is not the usual loading noise that one may her when opening a new program for example. This is a new, alien noise, I noticed it started happening after I reformated.

It's like a quick buzzing that sounds sort of metallic. I notice this doesn't happen when I am in Safe Mode.

I read in another forum that this may be a memory issue?

From your desctiption I would say your drive is dying on you. Back up any crucial data and RMA it if its still under warenty. Its worth the time and money shipping, trust me. Most companys will ship out a new drive first if you give them your CC and then refund it when they get the old drive.

Checked the sectors and everything, they passed.

Is there a way I could just copy my OS to a different drive, and then just bring it back? I don't want to have to reinstall and everything all over again, I've had plenty share of that.

1. use the drive manufacturer's tools and run a diagnostic test.

2. use their tools to do a drive copy, or use a ghost app.

its proven that if you stick your hard drive into a freezer when its about to die that you could get anywhere to 1 extra day of life all the way to a month of it still working.

I dont mean just throw it in a freezer, put it in something first :slant:

well making the noise that he's talking about it will die soon, I got the S.M.A.R.T error when I heard loud clicks on my HD, you should check for that and make a backup immediately.

just to clarify:

the freezer trick has worked, according to several anecdotes. but it's a last resort. freeze the drive for one last try to recover data. it will most likely not work afterwards.
