Hey, my friend wants me to put panther on hs ibook g4, and he said that his mothers friend let him have it if he could figure out how to get pass the psswords. I tried booting from the CD to reset the passwords but i get a lock and a password box
this isnt looking good, he caled the lady and she doesnt know what the password is and thats why she gave it to him. Is there a way to acces the volume so it can be upgraded?

Just install over the existing... if there is nothing on there he wants to keep, wipe and start over.
Passwords are stored in etc/passwd, but they are encrypted. Good luck trying to crack it... better off trying to guess it.
well, i just found out that it has what they call an "open firmware" password.
nothing worked, not even adding/removing ram!
Ahhh... bios password... very bad.
But hackable... just foloow the instructions carefully.

ok, i just added a 128mn stick to the top section ram slot (under the keyboard and right under the airport card) And when i started it i held down option-command P-R, but it stil booted normally and right back to the login screen!
isnt there a way to log in as admin from the login screen when the option isnt there? like a keysroke that enables the admin login box to show?
No.. and you must Zap the PRAM 3 times in a row.

2) Then, the PRAM must be reset 3 times. (Command + Option + P + R).
i was able to gain access to the "kids" account, and everything is locked! i do have access to a terminal-type program but i just dunno what to do. everything needs an admin password
well i use linux a lot and i can safely tell you that on some linux computers with little security (i dunno about osx) try
sudo su
which will tell it "superuser (admin) do" which runs a command as the admin and then tells it to su (super user) if its less secure than it should be, this will get you to an admin prompt. (obviously type these commands in terminal)
Looks like you're gonna need to do a fresh install... it appears you got past the openfirmware password issue.
lol never got past open firmware (it only came up when i tried booting off CD which i wanted to do to clear passsword and install panther) but i can boot fine, i just got to the login screen with three users passworded. i guessed the kids password and its so limited

Nice, it worked, just need the superuser (root?) password!
Would boting of a FW hard drive do it? Than you might be able to tick the "Ignore ownership on this volume" when it has mounted.
EDIT: macosxhints.com forum might be another good place to ask for help.
hmm firewire drive wont work. when i tried booting from other drives using the command at startup, i get that OF password lol
Yea.. you're gonna have issues until you clear the openfirmware password.
if only i could gain access to the netinfo folder which is locked. it asks for a name and password with an admin account.
