Will AveDesk 1.3 ever see daylight?

Hey everone.

I've been very busy lately, with uni, work, other stuff, real life.

Development of AveDesk has been halted literally. I didn't touched any of the source-code since february. I have a hard time updating the documentation (sorry, RIMMER :( ).

So, my question is, is there anybody at all waiting for AveDesk 1.3 - which will be mainly bugfixes and some UI improvements?

I have less and less time to invest into this project, so I am considering some other options too. Opening the source code for everyone - it's not that impressive at all :P -; making it payware, for a small fee like 3 euros or something; making a lighter desktop-icons only version - no more desklets; or just forgetting everything about it.

Some of my ideas (barely implemented currently) and things I want to implement are:

- ShowCase Extended (*cough dashboard bar cough*):

avedesk13_showcase_thumbnail.png

- Package creator

click, click, click and you have an aveinst package file.

- .NET support thru COM interop.

What's your idea about this?

Please, whatever you do, don't make it payware. I personally feel an open source effort would be best. Why not put it on SoureForge then everyone can contribute. I feel that if it was open source it would benefit a lot of people and development would be faster. I think that would be the best idea, but of course, it's your call.

#280971

Sell it to stardock! (Ave knows I am joking, as he would never do that, unless it was for a lot of money :P )

#280974

You could consider selling it to microsoft maybe they would use it in future os's to compete with tiger who knows.

#280978

I would buy it if it was payware Ave...3 euros (is that about 5 USD?) isn't too much for this great program.

#280984

Make it opensource would be the best :)

#280985

open source WOULD be nice.

Then we could adapt it, use the engine to replace all the desktop icons AveDesk Desktop Icons with nice labels..etc, the possibilities are endless, and it saves you work :)

Though if you need the money, making it payware wouldn't be bad.

#280990

Make it opensource would be the best :)

Goes with the open source indead becuase if u make it payware or whatever sum1 ill buy 1 copy then distibute it!

And then u totally loose out ;)

#280993

Andrea,

You really should charge for this app, it is insane that it is still free! :)

#280997

I wouldn't mind paying, though open source might be a nice thought.

I'd really really like to see a working automounter. :) Then, my Avedesk setup will be complete.

#281000

open source..

don't sell it to the big wigs at m$ or others.. they'll just sell it at 3 times the price and cut out all the good bits.

#281005

open source!!!!

>.> then, someone'll port it to linux... and maybe mac os... and maybe... maybe.... dunno... os/2 or sumthing....

bah... open source it!!!

and good luck in the university, watcha studying?

#281010

I've had daydreams about getting a lot of money (lottery, or bank theft), and then donating a VERY large sum to Ave.

Just thought you guys should know.

P.S: I'm not kidding.

Y E S !!!

Open source...would that mean retirement fro mthis scene for you and others takingover?

PAYWARE>>>ADVANTAGES? Would that mean you could find yourself more time for the project?

Lighter version...to focus upon bugfixes e.o. and allow others to develope the desklets?

Interesting IMO.

All sounds great to me. Please continue you work. :slant:

how about a funding drive to make it open source?

ie. people willing to donate create a pool of money(or just a pool of commitment to specific donations or something).. when it reaches a reasonable level(set by you) = take the cash and make it opensource.

then you can continue developing as much as you care/don't care to, meanwhile other people can add to it or create branches that are specialized for specific tasks.

I don't know, seems like you should get a nice amount of $ for what you've already done if your going to opensource it - you have put alot of work into it.

New features look tasty too, + yes i've been wondering what is going into 1.3 :) .

But really, just make sure you have a real interest in whatever path you choose to take it.

Thank you for bringing us AVE desk. It's a great piece of work.

Please don't make it payware. An open source program will allow others to develop the software into a better program.

This is just my thoughts.

Thank you for everything .

#281069

There is no question we are waiting for AveDesk 1.3. It's a great app. and I would like to see it evolving.

As for the future of AveDesk, of course I would like it to remain free (even as open source). But if you decide to make it payware, well, I can't blame you. I understand that it's a lot of hard work involve in it and I respect your effort. I think you've done a great job so far.

Thank you, Andreas! :D

#281087

i'm totally waiting for an update - it's a bit of a shame that this great app has lost some of its momentum, but with school and the like it's totally understandable. i'd bet there are more than a few people that are waiting for an update...

#281094

Yes please I want 1.3, I want the bar. Its looks mad, man.

#281099

Yes, we are all waiting for the next version 1.3 / 2.0 with bated breath :)

Please make it opensource as suggested by most ppl here. New features can be added more speedily and bugfixes would be more plentiful. It will still be your baby though !!

#281104

This is my favorite program, I would love to see the next version and it's developement. It's your call and I would gladly pay for this as well....

#281110

as much as I wholly respect open source development, you are one of the most advanced developers around here and I'd hate to see something you've worked so hard on stagnate on development. I would gladly pay a few dollars for this if I had to. 5 bucks is not a large investment!

#281114

avedesk is a MUST , i would pay.... you can do "the pool" someone talked about . put a price then all the customers would put money on it... then you release it opensource

#281140

Hello AndreasV, please don't stop the development of AveDesk 1.3.

Speaking for myself i can assure you that i was looking forward to every release since 1.0 - and 1.3 will fix the dual-monitor bugs (you said in one thread :P). Just kidding.

I think many people use and love AveDesk.

One cheerless trend i noticed since the release of AveDesk 1.2: Hardly any new Desklets. There should be a stronger community - and a more focused central meeting point. After 1.1 there was a lot more guys developing new desklets for AveDesk.

Perhaps it is possible to share the workload the future development of AveDesk makes. You might find other talented developers that will help you. Going OpenSource might be a solution for this problem.

What ever you do, thanks for your great work!

#281146

One advantage of making it payware:

We could afford the Visual Basic for Applications integration license - writing desklets could become as easy as writing MS office macros with the fully functiona VBA IDE / debugger, the (somewhat old fash) fm20.dll forms, importing win32 functionality with declare statements (just thinking aloud).
