The Perfect Marble

I have seen lots of techniques to create a marble.

Since a real marble made of glass is transparent ... how would the transparency map for the inside of the marble look like ?

below here is an attemp from me to create a marble with transparency and reflections.

can someone advice me what part inside of the marble should be more transparent ?

heres one zombie sent me about 6 months ago (YES I BACKED SOMETHING UP!)

Aqua Orb Psd...

Not sure where it came from but enjoy

#24949

Yes but does it have transparency ? ... eg using with samurize:

download the psd :) has all the layers and goodies, it can be transparent

The closer to the center of the circle, the more transparent it should be.

Ok like this ? is it natural ?

the right one is like Ken said ... the left one is the one b4

WTH, I thought Kimmie was a bot from Shak's IRC?

Kimmie is MaXuS bot ;) ... Shaks bot is Diana. Anyhow ... was to lazy to log out and login as maxus ;) ... Grtz.

Heh ... If you know me for 7 years ... its that last year my nickname is MaXuS ... for all the friends on internet ... they even call me kimmie in real life.

Anyhow ... back to the marble thingy ... lets put something inside it. So that thing isnt transparent at all ... but it is affected by the marble colour itself ... Where should i apply its shadow ? underneith it ? behind it ? what is the natural shadow effect inside a marble (is there a shadow even ?)

i think the more to the center ... the marble colour should be applied more to the object inside the marble.

like this ?

(god damn whish i had a 3d program installed but i have no diskspace available atm ... )

I don't think real objects in life don't look like that. The light of the marble is too perfect and well defined. It is so perfect that it moves away from reality. The edges of the top light reflection should be softer and no so well defined. Here I applied a blur just to the top edge (maybe I over did it so that you get the idea). Real life objects don't reflect light so perfectly giving perfect reflections.

You could get a marble to look like the one Kimmie posted but it would have to have a strong light at a very specific angle and it would have to be deeper blue tint so that when a powerful light hits it it lightens it up. These conditions are to perfect for most.

As for the transparency, I'd suggest you reduce the transparency in the center by 10% and set the edges to near opaque. Unfortunately, I'm away from my PC and can't test it, so it's just a guess.

Hmmm... shadow is not right for the object you place inside the marble. The way you have it, it looks as if Maxus is lit from top and behind. Even in that case, the shadow should be much lower than where you placed it. Besides, the marble highlights indicate that it's lit from the top and front. In any case, I suggest that you drop the Maxus shadow completely.

Try raising the marble shadow by a few pixels by 5-8 pixels and lower the white highlighting elipse on top of the marble by 2-3 (as in Timan's orb).

Add a couple of eggs, sugar and butter. Bake for 1/2 hour. Enjoy!

Good luck!

shouldn't it be the other way around? Coz a sphere, I suppose, is the most dense in the middle..

#25030

No! It has to do with the angle your eye touches the surface at every point (ok, i admit it... my english sucks!).

The density is the same all around. It's true though that in the middle the sphere is thicker and without considering reflections one would expect an opposite result.

does anyone have a marble in the house?

we need to test it out in reality.

btw great job Kimmie, keep up the good work.

what WB theme is that???????

#25312

it's the angle of reflection/refraction... i just learned about it in physics this year. when you look straight through, the light you're seeing gets refracted less, so you can see what's behind it. etc.

unfortunately, i don't have any marbles. hah, i just got that.

has anybody tried google?
