Aqua-Soft ForumsJust upgraded an iBook from Panther to Tiger, now when I go to shut down or restart, all that is stopped is the Finder. The window manager (aqua) is still running, as is the X-Window stuff that apple does. (ie, my mouse still works). The hard drive sounds like it's powered down as does the fan, but nothing else happens. I've let it sit for over 10 minutes and nothing, so I'm completely lost and I can't find any help on this one.

Sounds like something is stuck processing in the background. I've seen two different culprits causing that behavior. First, take a look at Activity Monitor and see if there is a process holding up the CPU. If so, then select that process and Quit it from within Activity Monitor. The two things I've seen that cause that are 1) Virex and 2) a corrupt icon or file on the desktop.
If you have Virex from Panther or Jaguar days, then get rid of Virex completely. Virex has not worked right since Jaguar and Apple has stopped supporting Virex with the release of Tiger. I have read reports of Virex causing problems, such as hanging the OS, for people who have tried to run Virex with Tiger.
If you have any files on your desktop, then one of them might be corrupt or have a corrupt icon, which hangs the Finder. Move all your files from the desktop into a folder and see if that works. If so, then you know it is one of those files or icons and can test each one to find the culprit.

No virex running. It could be a corrupt file, as I know all the BT downloads go right to the desktop. The activity monitor is always open and I know nothing there is doing it. But the deltop items and the dock clear too, it's just the background pic, the mouse and the activity monitor (if it's open) that stays. And it didn't do this under Panther. Tis quite a prediciment
After loggin in as other users, including root, I can be assure it is nothing on the desktop
