the first part was in italian basically said I am a humble servent of god etc...and the cardinals have elected me pope
the second part was in latin and was a blessing (ask seph for a translation, mofo loves his latin rootwords)

i'm not kidding about him being a member, it was supposedly requred of all the youth in nazi germany.

or perhaps not? Remember that John Paul II was also ultraconservative, but his popularity helped bring more people to the church (mainly from developing nations but still). I doubt we'll see a radical reform pope in the near future, the essence of the church leadership is that of a conservative body. Maybe wait till our generation reaches 60-80 years of age and some of our "modern" preists become cardinals, but by then...they'll be viewed as ultra conservative

I'm from Germany, and I can tell you following:
1. Our new pope IS conservative
2. He has some really strange opinions about pregnancy-abortions and contracetives, in fact he seems to think that both is not the right for a good christian and this would maybe bring some new, not very liberal aspects in the discussion.
3. Even a friend of my grandfather (my grandfwther was to young at that time) joined the HJ (Hitler-Jugend) - you call it Nazi-Youth, but he wasnt there, because he wanted to do, but he was forced to go there. He didnt like the whole thing, ut he had to go with it to survive. The Nazis were bad, but this time is over. Everybody had to make a choice, and many people had been condemned because of there acting in the WW2 and under the Nazis. The following generation shouldn't be justified by there fathers or grandfathers.
Yes, there are still Nazis or very extreme thinking people, but you can find them everywhere, cant you?
4. I'm not very happy about our new pope, but, we'll see what the time brings to us.

Too conservative for the Christian Faith as a whole. Considering how much the numbers of active church-goers has been dropping, I don't think it was a smart move for the Vatican to alienate such a large percentage of their members, by electing such a conservative pope.
Plus, I would have like to have seen a black or latino pope...
