[Preview] Light tiger style wood theme!

Love OSX tiger? love wood texture? want to see the two combined decently?

Its about time someone did it, and this was the inspiration to create my first ever theme.

I must first admit that I borrowed resources from two other themes - the orange OSX tiger port and the windows style theme 'Lightwood'.

What are the current copyright laws???...as I know you guys out there would love this theme when its finally finished.

It will include a y'z dock skin and msstyle file.

-gotta love the start menu and dock- they look mad!

It combines light wooden textures, pinstripes, gel scroll bars and other osx style candy buttons.

It's got a long, long, long, long way to go but what do you guys think of it so far?

Wood isn't my thing, but for what it is, its not bad. The one thing that i would change though would be to use a smaller variety of wood textures, keep it a little simpler and less cluttered. For example, at the top of the start menu there are far to many different textures, as with the window borders and background, try and keep them a similar shade. that's only my opinion though, see what others say.

and umm no offense, but why would i want to use image shack if i have all the files on my hard drive with 60Gb free?

ok...i'm working on it...lol...I reduced the resolution to 640x480 for the picture, so that you could see it better, it looks slightly better on 1024x768...

Sorry for the double post but:

just replaced the explorer's toolbar with pinstripe instead of wood texture...the start menu is the one thing i'm reluctant to change...i think its beautiful...A work of art that says as much about the theme as a wallpaper...

surely theres someone out there who shares my opinion about the start menu...

Perhaps its due to the small screen resolution and lack of items I keep on the start menu...?

no offence taken, i think u missed my point. you can use image shack to post them online, so u dont have to attach a really low quality thumbnail.

it's very blockey for me. try smoothing and making consistant colors for your theme. you have a too big varity of wood textures. chose one. perferably safaribrushed style with wood color. the diffrent textures don't fit together. i know that it's beta, and it's a very good start. it can use some improvement, otherwize, it's great!

great idea CDI...thanx for the tip......I'll post a new pic using image shack when i've done some further work to the theme.

Steelfist, the textures are a lot smoother than they appear its bad resolution in that piccy...if you don't believe me take a look at the wallpaper...lol thanx for the tips though...

erm...and i don't want to be more negative towards your constructive critisism steelfist, but brushed metal and wood colour...to me those textures would not 'fit together' better than pinstripe and wood...-correct me if i misunderstood.

UPDATE

IMPROVEMENTS

-textures smoothed, through using blur carefully in photoshop

-textures on the taskbar (the window ones) have been changed/simplified, they are clearer, and contrast to the taskbar itself

- the ugly repetative texture on the top of the windows has been replaced by one which is simple, more grainy and now they line up with the dark brown window borders

- The textures have been changed from wood to pinstripe on the explorer bar.

- the theme cheesily code named 'Tiger Woods' now comes in four flavours; red, aqua, orange and graphite (these flavours alter gel buttons, progress meters, tabs, scroll bars...etc, but not the taskbar, window tops etc...)

- Amount of textures and thier detail have been redueced, to give a more polished look.

TO DO LIST

- remove white octagonal scrap from around the circular minimise/maximise/help/close buttons...

- replace texture on the bottom of the start menu with something of better resolution/grain...but similar style.

- make the taskbar window holders more responsive, eg- color changes on click, when hovered over, when window is busy etc...

- Add OSX style cursors (black with white edges and a cool spinning colour wheel instead of the hourglass)

-other suggestions after you see the new screenshot...

Anything i've missed in my 'to do list' ? anyone know where i can find the circular minimise/maximise/help/close buttons?...(i don't feel like removing the scrap manually thru photoshop)...

-Am considering releasing beta soon to those who want to test it! who wants a turn!? ...what should I know about releasing themes? and copyright etc?

Would red, graphite or orange be more your thing Sam? -because i'm also releasing those 'flavours' as well, in the same style.

if not then fair enough. Wood is something that has been rarely done with mac style themes, and rarely done well.

Its hard, especially as my first theme...i should have done something easier, but felt inspired to go where little people have gone before.

With no guides and nothing done before even in osx to my knowledge, creating a woodtheme is hard, I wanted to create a fairly royal, clean yet funky look (sort of 70's ish)...don't know if i have come close to my aim.

I was tempted to copy garage band style but didn't like the dark tones etc...looked a little rubishy to me.

But if you want to make a wood theme, make it...but you can't just make a wood theme and put OSX buttons and tabs on it and call it a "mac theme"

The thing is, Wood doesn't match aqua. They are not even in the same catagory.

the aqua gray and the wood clash horribly IMO :(

perhaps you should use a completely diffent shade of wood (ok, that would be a lot of work!)

or somehow change the gray to make it a little less aqua-y.....

Maybe you should give up on the theme altogether man, no offense but I don't think many people will use it. Just gather your strengths, look at other people's work, practice, and make a theme with experience.

Woah ok...I accept that u don't like my theme.

I just loved wood and the aqua interface....obviously they don't mix. but in my own opinion i don't mind it.

If theres anyone there still interested in my theme, your welcome to develop and finsh it, its not quite finished, and if theres little want for this sort of theme then i couldn't be bothered finishing it...

Sorry i just thought something different from just the exact mac ports would be better recieved

Personally, I dont like it. Please dont take it personal. Im not trying to put down anybody or hurt any feelings..its just that 'wood' as a theme looks absolutely disgusting if you ask me, I cant work around it, and it looks even worse on mac...or made to look like a mac theme. Brown can look good on a theme, it just cant be wood. Sorry.

but the other guys are probably right, i should get some practice first. i wasn't taking thier comments personally, but still thanx....

never the less...maybe i'll start with an easier theme than wood...or some other customisation form.

I still want to see a great wood theme...I see the amount of mistakes in my theme far from finished and I can't live with it anymore, nor can i be bothered to put in more of an effort into it.
