Professional Opinion

My computer is a Pentium II, running Windows 98 with 128MB of RAM. What is my best option to get the interface to look like MacOS 8? I'm really at my wits end. Oh, and I can't seem to access Win2Mac's site.

Window Blinds is probally the only way to go for 98.

Just get the trial and search for the mac classic skin.

Also just to let you know, if you skinned 98 too look like OS X it'd probally work just as well as the classic skins.

What am I looking at in terms of memory destruction here? I couldn't find anything on RAM usage with WB.

EDIT:// I went to the WindowBlinds website and only the one you have to buy (for an outlandish price) seems to support Windows 98. Am I missing something?

#269413

well, ur missing the train to progress :P

#269417

Well, what do you mean by that. If it was a sarcastic statement, gee that helps alot. Now shoo fly, shoo.

#269421

It's unbe. Of course it was sarcastic. I'll translate:

"My dear sir, you should seriously consider upgrading your operating system programme to a newer product, as Windows version 98 is indeed quite aged and not very suitable for the task of an aqua-makeover."

As far as WB goes, I don't know exact numbers or whatnot, but last I heard it wasn't too bad for memory usage.

I'm not wealthy, so I can't afford new hardware, and as for a new OS, I can't use Windows 2000 or higher because it's disgustingly slow, and I need Windows for school. So there.

EDIT:// In fact, the computer I have now was given to me by a friend who is poorer than me, but who owes me one (let's just say it has to do with KMART and a forest fire).

#269431

I"d suggest getting a new computer if possible, even a bare-bones celeron would be better than what you've got now. Windowblinds uses very little memory, its currently using about 1 mb of memory for me.

#269432

Getting a new computer is impossible, aside from stealing one. And I'm not going to jail just so I can compile things faster.

EDIT:// Oh, and for clarification, even getting a new processor is impossible, because my mobo won't accept anything except the Pentium II slot-thing. So I suppose I'd have to get a new mobo, proccessor, and RAM. Sounds like a NEW COMPUTER to me.

#269433

Why not sell this one on eBay or something to get the cash? New computers better than yours don't cost too much.

#269442

I actually tried to, and got no bids. So I gave up on that. The mobo has been acclaimed as the worst ever made by ASUS, and the processor is actually the lowest Mhz in the series of Pentium IIs. Also, if I sold it, I'd keep the RAM. It took me 3 months to save up the money to buy a 128MB stick, so it's going nowhere. Oh, and the powe supply is missing parts, and according to my brother (who is a computer expert) is ready to cook my machine at any minute. And it has no fans.

How old are you? If you are under 16, i'd say get a paper route, i've payed for everything that way, including a 1000 dollar computer, and about 350 dollars in upgrades. If you're older than 16, get a real job, pay for a computer in 5 weeks.

You asked for opinions, so I am going to give you mine (I don't know how the "professional" fits into it though).

You want to mod more computer, right? But you don't have the money to get a new computer, or to pay for the software aforementioned (which would be the best choice, and other choices would not be far from those). If your computer is in that bad of shape, and you need one for school, I am sure that the school would have some computers for you to use. If not, then the school has no right to force you to use a computer. But, you can't mod much a computer on the specs that I can see.

I have Windows XP on a PIII 500 MHz 128MB o' RAM, emulating OSX. Windows XP opens many more doors on the modding side of things. Slow? Yes. But because I don't have money and working my way through college, I have to set my priorities and I am content with my computer. Like people said, computers are very cheap. You can probably get an entire system for $300-400 if you look through the paper.

If you are not in college, it would be good to get a job if you can. Even if your college ride is paid for. Once you do get into college, a ton of things are going to come up and you will be using money right and left exponentially each month.

If you are in college, apply for some grants or scholarships. There are thousands of scholarships for everything imaginable.

And so are your hopes of skinning.

Besides... the memory stick you have is not compatible with anything other than the ancient PC you have.

Hanging on to it would be pointless.

I mean really... you can pick-up that 128MB memory stick you have there for like Correction.. $20.00... brand new!!!

Been a while since I bought PC66 memory.

Not here in Michigan, chubby. Office Max is the closest thing to computer tech. we have here. Anywho, my parent's won't let me get a job because the believe it will interfere with my schooling. Thanks to child labor laws (being 15 and all) I have to have a parent sign off on like 5 papers so I can even apply for a job. Anywho, I got the latest of WindowBlinds Enhanced (eMule'd) so we'll see how things turn out. Though I forgot to mention (in my defense) I have seven other computers (all of them are way worse than this one) running FreeBSD or QNX. All of those are donated, too. I'm the computer guy at the school, so when someone doesn't want their old computer anymore and no one will buy it, they give it to me. Meh.

For one.....it depends on where you live in Michigan. I have everything around me (including an Apple store), so don't make us Michiganders look bad! Second, get a job!!! At the age of 14 I was holding a job and was able to make at least 300 every two weeks and got good grades....so you can work bub! That was only 6 years ago...I doubt the laws on child labor have changed since then. ;)

Well, that's what I told my parents, but they still won't let me get a job until summer. So, I'm outta luck until then. I have the skills to get a job anywhere I want, so I'm not saying it's impossible. At the current time, yes, though.
