hi there, i'm trying to replace some bitmaps which reside in my shell32.dll file. I use Resource Hacker (reshacker) to replace those bmp-files. The original images I edit (extracted fron Flyakite), are allright. If I insert them into my shell32.dll file, it works fine.
As far as I understand I'm dealing with 32-bit bitmaps. Photoshop7.0 is capable of saving 32-bit .bmp-files. But, there seems to be something wrong with my file. Whenever I try to replace the bitmap with Resource hacker I get an error: "Access violation at address 00402791....". I only get this error with images I edited.
I read this at Virtualplastic.net:
XP adds some images inside files with an alphablending like behaviour (IE and explorer toolbars etc). That means these bitmaps are 32 bits per pixel, 24 bits for full colors, adding 8 bits to have an alpha channel defining transparency regions. As opposed to bitmaps that are less 24 bit or less, most editors (or least free ones) don't support 32bit bitmaps, making them harder to edit.
This information seems a bit outdated? In Photoshop there is an option to save it as a 32-bit bitmap, I can even put a check before 'alpha channels' and specify if I want " 32 bit: X8 R8 G8 B8" or "32 bit: A8 R8 G8 B8". This option can by found under "advanced modes" (or something..I have a the Dutch version) in the Save as dialog.
Is there anyone who knows how to edit and save 32-bit images with Photoshop and make Resource hacker accept these? I know there is the possibility to save the file as PNG, open it in Paint, save it as BMP, but I just can't believe it isn't possible in Photoshop.
