Odd Desktop Bugginess

I keep having an issue where everytime a new object is placed on my desktop, it goes to the bottom right corner. I cant for the life of me figure out why. This occurs if I save to the desktop, make a new folder, or plug in a device. Always lays the new icon on top of the old ones until I have a stack of 20 or so.

Quite irritating. I have tried various tweaks to the desktop arrangement to no avail.

Anyone else have this problem or got a fix? Its probably something simple I have overlooked.

Have you changed the View Options? On the desktop, press CMD+J. Tell the folder (for either all of them or just your desktop) to sort by kind... hope that helps. :D

The only thing that works is if I tell it to "Keep arranged by" which drives me insane. I would rather it place icons in open spots like it used to. :(

That's pretty weird... I don't if this will help, but try repairing disk permissions. Better yet, download OnyX or ****tail and run their scripts.

As I am unfamiliar with either of those, would you care to elaborate as to how they might help solve the problem? Its just a weird, weird bug that I haven't seen duplicated anywhere else.

How many icons do you have on your desktop already? I'm going to assume you have enough that they fill a whole "column" of icons on the right-side of the desktop; in which case some applications don't seem to "update" the desktop correct (or maybe it's the Finder); and won't begin a new column once there's no room - and they overlap.

This happens to me if I download many files using Firefox.

Well I had 3 columns on my desktop. Before I've had 8 and it still worked fine, placing the newest file in the first open space. I performed a few test by moving everything off my desktop and saving text files over and over until a column was full.

To narrow down Firefox, I quit the program to be sure. No luck.

Here is what it looks like. Not that "9.rtf" through "13.rtf" are under the "buggydesktop.gif".

I appreciate any and all help. This is driving me nuts.

Like I said. I can resolve it by utilizing "Keep arranged by: X" but that just bypasses the problem.

It's not a bug. Some combos of options/icon sizes make it "think you can fit it in the bottom with a little bit of space, but if you click it or just drag it a little, it should go to the next column. Try changing icon sizes.

well that seemed to fix it. icons at 44x44 seem to work. I'd still call it a bug when the os cant determine where to place an icon properly. :) I had messed around witht he icon sizing before but guess i just didnt hit the right size.

what do most of you guys use?
