[help] Connecting a Camera to your Mac

I have my mac and all but the video camera seems to not connect to my computer. Usually, well to everything that i have connected, the item shows up on the desktop the same way that iPods connect. What exactly am I suppose to do to makes sure that it connects?

The camera is a Mini DV JVC.
