Aqua-Soft ForumsSamba 2.2.3a (Build 26) mysteriously showed up on our network... It sounds like a mac thing... anyone know what it is? and what it does?

well, when a mac connects to a PC, its like smb:// and its called samba
when its mac to mac, its afp:// or apple file sharing protocol..
so is there any use for it? i can't open it... password protected...

not unless that mac is supposed to be sharing files, no there is no use to you right now
the use is that Macs and PCs are supposed to be able to talk to each other on the network....actually, Samba was a unix/linux thing so they could get on PC networks, but OS X is Darwin which is Unix so its the same
Yeah, I use Samba to connect to my Windows Network in Linux. Didn't know Macs used them though, I guess it makes sense, since macs are so good at connecting to windows networks.
samba is simply a *nix way of sharing resources between windows and
*nix flavors. Resources like printer sharing, file sharing and the ability to
mount windows disks unto *nix.
to access it use the root password for the linux/mac machine, whichever it is.
Alternatively, on linux, go to http://localhost:901 i think.
from there you can set up your samba server quite easily
or in OS X, go to the Go menu then click Connect To... then just enter the IP address, and it does everything for you..
