UXTheme Problems

Hey Guys,

I just formatted my PC again with XP SP2 and got all the updates. For some reason the 2.5.1 UXTheme.dll patch doesn't seem to work and has messed up my Windows. Before I patched my system, I could change between the luna and classic visual styles. After patching, when I hit the apply to apply to apply an external VS my computer stays at the "Please Wait" part forever. Now I can't even use the the regular XP Visual Style (not that it's a bad thing ;) ). I'm stuck with using the classic windows VS.

I tried to uninstal the patch, re-enable the themeing service, system restore before patching etc... even reformatted my PC but i got the same problem in that it will be stuck applying a VS.

Do you guys have any ideas? Could it be any of the newer updates that have been released?

Help is much appreciated.

I had that happen to me once. Use the Neowin patch, don't have the link but search the forums here for it. That or Flyakite's pack has a seperate patcher with it.

Figured out what it was kinda. I reformatted my pc again... but this time I installed the UXtheme patcher before getting updates after SP2. One or more of the new updates stops the patcher from working.

do you know which updates? there may be updated patches.

and for the record, don't use the mulit-patcher. it doesn't work very well. always replace the file manually with replacer.

I had similar troubles some time ago when updated to SP2. It seems like that after you install SP2, WIndows XP puts an additional, original backup copy of Uxtheme.dll somewhere. I tried all manners of multi-patchers, but none worked. I decided to go into Safe Mode and started to look. Eventually I found the "extra" Uxtheme.dl file in C:WindowsServicePackFilesi386. This folder exists only after you install a service pack on top of an existing instalation, and not when you install it slipstreamed. Replacing the file in this folder, as well as the old locations (C:WindowsSystem32Dllcache and C:WindowsSystem32), restarted the Themes service, and finally got my custom visual styles working again.

Part of the information here comes from a post by Vorte[x] a few months back on Neowin.

I've installed FlyakiteOSX 2, but am still having uxtheme issues on my PC at work (I have admin access - lucky I'm an IT Security guy). I get repeated popups of the "Windows File Protection" dialog, and now, it's giving me the sh*&%.

I've applied the Neowin uxtheme patcher in addition to the universal in FlyakiteOSX, but nothing appears to be working. I'm a little over it, and would really appreciate some advice (happy also to receive "look here" advice accompanied by gentle slaps up side my head for not looking around enough).

TIA.

Steve

UXTheme is always maintained by windowx over techconnect/techmagazine.

Take a look, uxtheme is 4.0 there :) with a wilder support of system>XP.

Neowin uxtheme multipatcher is an oldware :P and sadly mod your registry database with his ugly color theme :)

do it manually: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=312381

it's never failed.

Not until now.... I've tried millions of times to update the .dll, but to no avail. I have even done it MANUALLY! (d/loaded the .dll and replaced the old one) I cannot get any third-party themes to work! I am going to try it in safe mode, but if that doesn't work, you won't hear from me until somebody proposes a solution.
