[preview] Virtual Console, my first desklet :)

Hi community,

this is a preview of my very first AveDesk desklet. :) It replicates the Windows console on your desktop so that it will always be there when you need it. You can run the command-line interpreter in the virtual console, or you can run any other command-line application like ssh or telnet clients, file monitors, etc.

The desklet is still in its early stages and I still have to finish it before release. However, I'd be glad to get some preliminary feedback. ;)

A couple of details:

- the text's font, foreground and background color are fully customizable

- the text is an overlay, so you can add any background image you like through standard AveDesk control panel

- the number of columns is fixed to 80 but you can choose the number of rows to accomodate your layout

- you can specify the executable to run (default is cmd.exe).

Coming soon!

PS. if this is not the right forum where to announce releases and previews of custom desklets, please point me to the right place!

cool! right now i'm using a 3rd party console app, but i'd love to have something more 'native' (as i'm already using avedesk).

Yesterday I was looking around some linux ss and I was wondering about the console... nice!

Thanks!

#261519

This looks like a DAMN good idea. I use the console alot, and having one available at all times on the desktop would be very handy, I imagine.

Great Idea !!!

Can´t wait :)

#261530

This looks to be VERY useful!

You're a new member, and you just got nods of approval from both judge (the creator of SysStats), and Ave (the creator of the Earth...er, AveDesk).

If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will. Very promising, and I can't wait to see where this goes.

@ NilColor

"- the text is an overlay, so you can add any background image you like through standard AveDesk control panel"

You can have any or no background by removing the image (or just having a purely transparent png).

Ok, I've spent the whole day trying to consolidate the desklet implementation and solve some problems. I'm getting closer to the first alpha version, so here are a few fresh new screenshots! :)

last added features:

- text can be colored either by a custom fixed color or by native colors

- option to invert colors, useful to quickly adapt the console to light/dark backgrounds

- added an adjustable margin from the desklet borders

1) a transparent console featuring GNU Nano over a ssh session (native colors):

2) same as above, but with the "invert colors" option enabled

3) the good old (and awful) EDIT.COM (native colors)

4) fixed color with background image

5) maximum integration with the desktop!

Looking VERY sweet. For once, I'm actually following a thread waiting for a realease. Haven't done this since back in the days of Mobydock, long before it got DirectX or anything. :P
