Like Linux, Can you dump the Windows GUI and load anouther at startup?

Probally not, but, there are no stupid questions, juts stupid answers.

in windows no you cant.. but you can replace explorer.exe with another shell though

Litestep is a popular shell, but there are many others. There is even the AquaXP Finder that Alilm,Godpunk and others are designing.

The shell really encorperates Explorer, the desktop, and the start menu/taskbar.

If you really want to know what the shell does, kill explorer.exe and you'll see.

Its not as cusomizable as Linux, because much of the GUI is integrated into the OS.

You can kill explorer.exe in XP and you can use an alternate shell in XP. LiteStep is the most versatile shell. And if you are gonna start trying other shells, I suggest you get ShellOn2 http://www.dx13.co.uk/shellon/

hmmm... i'd say explorer's much more stable without litestep running.. .... but running avery small LS on top of explorer to get cool dockMenus and stuff like that is fun and fairly stable

I have tried some of these shells, and i think Aston is the best. But most of the shells dont have the ability to create txt's and files on the desktop, they only have shortcuts to things.

My favorite shell is LiteStep and it's super stable, depending on the modules and them you use. Get all your shell needs and information at Shellfront Be prepared to read alot if you try LiteStep.
