Which media player?

I'm using winamp and wmp, here is my opion about them:

Winamp 5:

:) very light: consume few ram and processor (classic skin tiny + play 1 song|0% proc|~5M ram)

:) best quality music

:) very nice visualization

:) best radio

:( cant download album cover

:( No media files manager: organize music file on local disk (artistalbumsong...)

WMP 10:

:) consume few ram (default skin + play 1 song|~8M ram)

:) start up faster than Winamp (dun belive it?)

:) download album cover

:) media library with files manager

:) best quality video (DVD, ergonomy...)

:( consume too many processor (at least 10%)

iTune/QuickTime:

How about this group of "playas":

  • iTunes as an iPod hook up / permanent audio library
  • VLC as a video player (is there anything this can't play??)
  • Winamp 2.91 (Fast starter, minimum memory footprint)- for playing wavs/midis and mp3's that are not yet added to my collection. Once they get knighted (added to the collection) they have the honor of being played by iTunes.

:( No Automated file sorting

WMP 10:

:) Low RAM usage due to windows integration

:) Faster start time due to Windows integration

:) Supports Cover Art

:) Automated File Management

:) Supports Video

:( Lacks support for subtitle supporting formats (e.g. Matroska) even with codecs

:( No control over content access (attempts to automatically find music information, even if already available)

:( High Processor consumption

iTune/QuickTime:

:D Built in iPod support

:) AveTunes

:) Low CPU usage

:( Slow start up time

:( Bad RAM usage (40M while playing without counting iPod Services)

:( Supports Video in Quicktime only

Foobar:

:) Best Audio quality

:) Best Plugin Support (Everything is customizable)

:) Uses FreeDB info database, no automated calls.

:slant: Difficult to judge RAM usage due to custom configs (14M for my config, has been 4M with others)

ACE Media Player Classic:

:) Supports Subtitled formats

:) Best quality video

:) Classic Media Player interface

In other words, I use iTunes to update my iPod, Foobar for listening to music and ACE for watching videos.

With a few mods, itunes only uses 4 mb of ram. This is my audio player of choice.

WMP is nice because of the library features and the advanced tag editor i just LOVE. But audio quality is something to be desired and randomization is just horrible. Video is good enough for me.

Winamp I just find cumbersome. All the features are hidden away. I used to a big winamp fan way back when, but wmp 10 and itunes have spoiled me with easy to use interfaces.

Foobar is nice, but its not very user friendly. THe different configs possible are confusing and its difficult to get it setup just the way you want it.

VLC is what i use for all those strange video files like OGM and matroska. WMP can handle some of them though.

iTunes... b/c I'm lazy and so I just throw all my musik in there and put on shuffle.

@ GillBates I use the same method as you :P except I use WMP for video instead of VLC, maybe I'll check it out

@Chi Chi Rodriguez Wow ram usage down to 4 MB? Mine averages about 15 MB.

winamp for music (small, fast, and i love the audio qualities, and the ease of using plugins, i wuuuuv sqrsoft advaced crossfading plugin)

vlc for normal videos

ace media player classic for videos with subtitles (.sub files)

wmp, a little too... fancy to my taste...

itunes, resource hog, and i don't have an ipod... therefore....

Am I the only person who uses QCD (Quintessential Player)?

great skinning engine, easy on the resources, very customisable, love the mass rename, and LOTS of other stuff

i do miss winamp's radio stuff though

and WMP has some nice features (like when you pop in a CD it identifies it almost immediately and fills in all the data, album cover, etc.) and for that reason I use it when I play CDs on my comp (which isn't all that often)

PC : Micro DVD for movies and Winamp for Music.

Mac : iTunes for Music and VLC for movies.
