Yea... I fail to see the humor as well. Despite M$ reputation, he has done a ton of work in the name of charity.

Bear in mind it's not a proper nighthood. He doesn't live in the UK, and so doesn't really deserve it - It's just some fancy name.
Still he deserves it, especially for the research work he supports in Cancer and Aids foundations.

Although he does hold a monopoly over computers, he is a good man and without M$ (even though i hate to say it) computers wouldnt be the same. Imo, he deserves it more than some musicians that receive knighthoods nowadays.

Agreed totally. He has contributed far more than some of those musicians that gets knighted. In fact, I don't think they deserve that title.

I totally agree. Without him, all computers would be like Apple and all operating systems would be very stable, all interfaces would be cute and there would be no Luna VS, which would be boring
What's telling you that without the "competition" , Apple would have done this excellent work? competition is good for advances

There is one caveat however. I doubt Bill Gates did his best to promote competition, he tried to keep his monopoly by all the means and to kill competition. The 95% market share talks for itself.
Now make no mistake. From a human point of view, i think Bill is doing a great job, by helping unlucky people.
However from a business point of view I don 't agree with his way of doing things...
yes, we have the same point of view about his "business model" but still, if Microsoft and Bill Gates (BHK) weren't there, I doubt Linux and Mac OS X would be as good, stable and innovative as they are right now... and this is what I was pointing out

Some of the most ruthless business men have been the most generous philanthropists, JD Rockefeller, GP Getty, Bill Gates, and WE Buffet have donated millions/billions to charities. Some see it as a general sense of goodwill, others choose to see it as the rich bastards redeeming themselves for their sins...either way charity is good.
Snakes make the best businessmen, again look at all the names I've mentioned, look at Martha Stewart (ok bad example, she went to prison, but still)...in such a harsh industry you cant afford to be altrusitic and "nice." It just doesnt work that way.

The reason why he gave money to Apple was because he had too, there had been a judgement that enforced that, otherwise believe me he wouldn't have do that...Well, that's another story!

Oh please don't give me that don't judge a book by its cover line lol....seriously, it is a good movie if you haven't seen it. I actually saw it in my marketing class when I was in high school. Have you seen the Martha Stewart made for tv movie, "Martha Inc" ? Another good one! Plus you know that Martha only went to prison because she is a woman...

Pirates of Silicon Valley; nothing too groundbreaking about it, just shows you how in those days good ideas were often missed out on by big companies (HP, IBM, Xerox). And that the birth of the GUI as we know it, came from Xerox PARC, even if they did nothing with it.
