[help] Hide or disable Firefox "Update" button

Can the Update toolbar button in Firefox 1.0+ be hidden or disabled? Changing the settings in Tools -> Options doesn't seem to affect it, nor does anything in about:config with "update" in its name.

I'm using hills' Safari theme, and there is extra space between the edge of the search bar and the right window edge due to an invisible Update button.

Is there some code I can put in theme.jar/mozapps/update/update.css to hide it or at least make it only 1 pixel wide?

Have you tried to right click the toolbar, click customize, and drag the update button into the box with the other buttons?

Yes, but it just grows back thicker.

And darker.

Try going to Tools>Options>Advanced>Software Update and make sure both boxes are unchecked. I always have them both unchecked and never get the icon.

You can always check for updates manually.

I'll check my list of userChrome edits and get back to you if I find anything in case the above doesn't work for you.

[EDIT] Sorry, didn't read properly, seems you have already tried the options.
