[Help] Connecting to university network

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls of the Aqua-Soft Community, how are you all today?

I hope that you are well.

I have a bit of a problem and was wondering if you could help me at all. I am trying to connect to my University's Network, I have been to see the IT support desk, but I was appawled at their attitude towards me, just because I had a lot of security on my computer and have disabled what I needed to network (because I have never had use for them before). However, I am not quite sure what I need to be able to connect my Laptop to the network, as I have never networked before.

I have Windows XP: Proffesional (So I know I'm okay there)

I do have an ethernet port and a network cable.

I also have Norton Internet security (Which I have tried disabling)

So it would seem to be that either Windows or the network itself is the problem.

I have tried enabling everything that I think I need to connect to the network and I do get an IP address and connect to their servers. However, I cannot go further than their servers. I.E. I am stuck in the comunication between the servers and my laptop.

So any Ideas?

Ok, dude!

First of all, you don't need to disable programs and stuff,

You need the following service installed into your Network card or wireless card.

Unforunatly I forgot what are the services and I'm currently in my College right now.

I will tell you later tonight.

You need at least three service in your network and all network should set it to automatic detection for router.

The university server may give you an IP address, but deny you access to the rest of the network. Check with the IT people about that (if you can).

It very much depends on the school. For instance, I work in the IT department at IU, and the way the network is setup, you cannot gain access to the internet without running a special CD that installs SP2, windows updates, security software, etc. Once that CD has run, you can then register on the DHCP server to get a valid IP.

If you're trying to get on in the dorm, there's a definite possibility that you need to do something first. Also, sometimes you might find you need to get your cable from the school - IU uses crossover cables; the Indianapolis campus uses custom-created cables with only four of the wires out of the eight actually used.

Well, the physical connection must be okay, because he is getting an IP address (even if it is invalid or unusable).
