Gah; GUI programming isn't easy in ANSI C++, but it is in Java. I suggest you try either Visual C++ or Visual Basic (similar to Java).
oh yeah i wouldnt have thought of developing it in ansi c... i just wanted to know if i could tie up to another language with the knowledge i have. i think i will start with visual basic. thanks !

No, Visual Basic .NET is not outdated. It's probably a good choice for a project like this.
