[Question] iPod Mini & storage

Would iPod Mini make a good portable storage device? Say, in place of a flash drive? Could I easily hook it up to a computer at school that I have little privileges on, and it would act like a usb drive?

If you still don't want to go there I'll tell you this: yes, iPod mini is a good portable storage device. If 4 or 6 GB is enough for you (minus the music of course) and you have a possibility to use Firewire instead of USB (it's faster, eats less CPU and is more stable) I say go for it. When you plug it in after a few moments (it takes much longer on USB than on Firewire) it appears in 'My computer' as a removable disk.

Google a bit - I know that there is a way to hack into Windows XP to get higher priviliges using removable disks

Haha... thanks for the info. I'm hoping that I won't have to do that in order to access the removable disk, since regular flash drives work fine @ my school

If your school computer is a Pentium 3 Dell @ 768 MHz and 256 MB of RAM, it will take approximately 6 minutes for the computer to recognize the iPod and allow access to it's disk drive.

(thank god my Network Admin has a powerful workstation so I can hook it up to his in 5 seconds and then transfer the files to so said crappy Dell)

Haha, no my school has fast new Dells with flatscreens everywhere (and no spyware )

I just didn't know that a mini would take longer to detect than a flash drive (which takes only a few seconds)

In that case... the iPod should work just fine. Just enable it for disk use through iTunes.

Hmm... I thought we were just discussing that... if you're computer's pretty fast and XP it should detect it as a removeable drive within a few seconds... right?

Also, on the Apple website it said the requirements is XP with SP2... so will it work on older versions of XP?

probably since itunes was made before xp sp2 was released and i think that was when the ipod first supported windows.
