#22607

people chose linux over mac OS X and i tend to be disappointed but god.. who can choose WINDOWS - Thats amazing.

I got a mac and honestly I think its a shame to include it with windows in the same list as a preference.

Its not even a comparison - Both artists and programers (for example me and my roomate) cannot unplug ourselves from the mac cause its just PERFECT for both programing and art, period. However, the stability and functionality is based on UNIX which thats what linux is all about, and i may understand programers/artists prefering UNIX. Whoever doesnt have a mac, and not just use one at a neighbour's/store place, can NOT really be objective and would almost definitely choose the mac over linux/windows if they had one, IMHO.

Mac OS X is ahead of all other OSs leaving them back behind with struggeling GUI and systems.

#22610

LOL... I see Goku has spoken before me. My mom was lecturing me right now so I got a bit delayed :P. But if you had the choice, wouldn't you want the stability of Unix AND the beauty of X?

#22613

Me growing up around windows pcs i'd have to say windows ;).. Windows is just so much easier (for me anyways) since i grew up using windows since good ol 3.1 came out. Linux was a pain and still is for me ;) its only lasted maybe a day on each new install. I havent actually sat down at a mac for more than 5 minutes, so i cant really say. But if someone hooked me up with a powerbook i'd be glad to switch :D

#22614

I love Mac, I imagein my Macintosh Classic is a really slow beage imac with a black and white 9" screen, and OS 7.5. But Windows is nice for its compatibiliy, My PC 533 will still run Dos 1.1. but an eMac wont run anything under 8.0. Please, Microsoft tryed pretty hard on Windows, If not for Windows we might not have some features of the Mac.

#22616

If I had a choice between Linux and OS X, I would still pick Linux. First of all, OS X is BSD Based, so its not the same a linux (though still similar). MOST of OS X is closed source (both hardware and software), and I dont like running closed OS's. With Linux, I can custom compile everything to my needs, so it will run faster and be more stable and bug-free.

I actually did have a choice when I went to buy a PC or MAC, and I chose the PC (for linux of course ;) ).

#22623

Well f***! One thing I hate about MS is they update their OS from 5.0 to 5.1 and make you pay for it. Apple Updates 8.0 to 8.5 an give it to you for free. And MS makes you pay 100-200 $ more to have pro, And pro doesnt only has 1 or 2 more features. God Damn!

Anyway, I too cannot believe some people actually chose Windows. I mean honestly, WHY do you like it? Because of the games? Thank the game developers, not the OS developers. The variety of apps? Thank MS's advertising, not the OS itself.

When I first bought my mac, I felt a little OS-sick - I wasn't used to the OS, its GUI, its hierarchy etc.. But once you get used to it - Lawd Gawd... you can't leave it! Honest.

Linux, I can understand. It runs on any platform, and its free. Can't really beat that :P. But if you had the choice, wouldn't you want the stability of Unix AND the beauty of X?

100%.

couldnt have said it better.

#22632

We are trying to do our best to make our PC's look like macs here, so I wonder why so many people voted for windows. Maybe because of window's crappy gui, but great versatility??

#22633

i guess its sort of hard to explain to people why guys like us choose linux over Mac os X...i love *nix type of systems and yes mac os X is a *nix type system with a beautiful sexy ass.. oh boy im going too far... uh GUI..... but i just cant get the *nix feel and power that i do with linux.. so

if i could id vote for linux AND mac os x.. but i cant

LOL @ iheartmacz: Oh yeah, cause Apple charging $120 for A POINT UPDATE thats even less major than 2000-XP is fair. I think 2000-XP is a big update. It had a completly new skinning engine, and it has lots more wizards (which Windows people NEED  )

You pay more for Pro because it can be part of huge networks (unlike home). Im not saying this is fair, but thats what you pay for.

hmmm... how much is the Windows update for? And how much is the Mac OS update for? k...

also, check this out.. Win95, Win98, Win98SE, Win98PLUS, Win2000Pro, WinXP, SP1...

now the last one you didnt have to pay for. And it was about time :P:lol:

And those of you who say there aren't alot of apps for Mac, you know what? I don't think you really use 500,000,000 apps. Honestly. All the stuff you need is available for the mac. Only its much better B).

Edit: Oh, and one more thing. You aren't forced to update a Mac OS. Unlike Windows, which you are forced to keep updating every one-two years to be able to enjoy the 'new features' which I think were always available in every version but locked by MS..

#22646

I chose linux because it has the stability of linux (doh) and can be made to look beautiful.

I'm fairly sure if i had enough screenshots, i could make a more faithful copy of macos without having to resort to 3rd party software (such as object bar).

The only problem is, despite there being total skinability, its difficult to find a really good theme (imo)

great post goku

but still ... all i can realy personaly choose linux.. its hard to show people of mainly GUI players what its all about.. theres still somthing missing in mac os X for linux users to switch or Unix users for that matter....i guess 4 or so years of using linux really got me attached to it.. shown me alot of things windows couldnt.... when im under linux i mainly use the terminal anyways.... how many mac guys use unix command lines every day...

linux people can compile there own kernel.. or have many kernels compiled to choose which to boot from at boot time of the computer...GUI system is seperate from linux... alot of resources are let free for server work...

its.. hehe hard to explain to you... try 4 years of just linux maybe you will see :)

but yes Mac os X has a Unix core.. i love that im happy.. finally unix has a beautiful face... BEST gui out there.... best friendly system out there

but for me... im mainly for the unix part.. mac os x just cant give me that feel

if i could install mac os x on my PC.. i would... but i still wouldnt delete linux.. it gives you somthing mac os X cant.. even though it has a unix core. Mainly because i think mac os 'x terminal cant do as much as a free Linux terminal CLI console can, and i love the terminal.

by the way, OS X support X11.

check it out: http://www.apple.com/macosx/x11/

So you can run all UNIX apps. Now is that cool or is that cool? B)

#22659

I have Mac OS X 10.2

But I have not a Mac! :(

#22660

Well, Apple doesnt embrace the custom compiling that Linux does. This is from the simple fact that except for the kernel, everything is closed source, so you CANT change it. You have to rely on what Apple gave you (my same problem w/ Windows)

Listen, im not saying I hate Macs (why would I be here?). I just prefer Linux. Mac is wonderful from the standpoint that you do get some UNIX and a perty GUI, so its better than XP, which is crappy NT, but DONT compare it to Linux and (real)BSD.

And X11 is cool, but I can get Cygwin for Windows and do the same thing. Plus theres a lot more x86 software than PPC. Why would I buy a mac if I want Linux?

Taha: There has been Service Packs for every version, and they have ALL been free. I mean, Windows NT was at Service Pack 4. It has totally changed from the origional, and if you bought it when it came out, youd never have to pay another penny.

I can't complain too much about Apple charging, b/c I dont own a Mac, but if I did, I would REALLY mind shelling out $129 6 months after I spend $1400 for a new mac.

MS doesnt MAKE you upgrade. My father still uses 98 and hes perfectly happy. MS still even issues Security updates (which Apple doesnt do for 10.1) .

Oh yeah, Im real scared Goku. ph34r has taken me.
