[help] modem troubles

While not as irritating as some other problems faced here, this is still very annoying.

OCCASIONALLY, and I can't really find any pattern, my wireless internet cops out, as does the local area connection on the desktop computer. The only thing out of the ordinary is that the Activity Light on the modem is always on during these times. I don't think it's a virus.

I called the tech guys, and they said it still might be a problem with the router b/c "the activity light always orange" may mean the same thing as it not getting through the router. Yeah, I'm not really sure what they meant. I don't think the problem started happening when we got a router. It was a few months after that.

To fix it, I powercycle both the modem and router. Actually, it's more of a quick hack--unplugging the router power, and the modem cable line. Then I replug the cable line in, and then the router power. This fixes it, but not always. Sometimes five minutes afterwards, sometimes ten minutes, sometimes days, the same thing happens again.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Ideas? Help? Money? A Powerbook I can have?

Thanks very much,

P.S: Is there a way to upgrade firmware for a modem?

When you say the Local Area Connection icon "disappears," does it give you a balloon message about it?

Sorry about the delay, kinda forgot about this :P.

No, if I recall correctly, it doesn't pick it up as being disabled (either wireless or wired) unless I disable and then enable again.

The same thing happens to me sometimes actually. I'd be on the internet, and all of a sudden it just...disconnects. I look at the "cable" light on the modem, and it shows that everything is fine.

If I unplug the ethernet and then replug it, and click "repair connection" from the properties, things work fine.

I don't want to have to do that. That's the point--I shouldn't even have to. At least I know I'm not the only one in the world experiencing the problem, though :).

This happens on my crappy Compaq frequently... I just now have Network Connections in the start menu and tell it to repair itself... I don't even bother resetting the actual modem/router.
