I have just installed winXp prof. on my P3 pc. it gets to the boot screen, and then next it's just black. Nothing. I can hear my computer strugling, although it has 384 MB of ram.
Does anybody know what the problem is? I recently put ina new graphics card, it should work...
BTW, My friend installed xp on his p2 with something small like 128 or 64 mb of ram and it works fine on his... What could the problem be?

it's your computer that's the problem obviously. ussually it's hardware that's the problem if your computer can't boot up corre ctly. however, because your computer detected the harddrives fine i'm not sure what else to suppose other than a currupt instalation.
remove all hardware that isnt 100% nescary for the install, and try again, replace new graphics card with old one.
lostspyder might be right about this. depening on what kind of gfx card you put in. I've had trouble on a p3 when i installed a nvidia high end card because it lacked backwards compatibility with the agp socket. in anycase... i've also found that Xp Pro sp2 may lag the computers startup time large on a Celeron 500.

Also make shure that your booting from the hard drive after you install XP. Did this computer run prior to this that you know of? Did it run XP with the new graphics card in?
Uhmmm try using a live linux cd... maybe its the psu, duuuuuuuunno, your new gfx card could be a little too.. juicy
It shouldn't be a problem, m8. One of my boxes is running XP Professional SP2, with a P3 600MHz and 384MB RAM. I also have it with a Radeon 9000 Pro AGP. Best thing to do is to reformat the drive and start all over again, however make sure no weird beeps are coming out during POST. Maybe the card, the RAM, or something else is not plug all the way in.
can you get into safe mode? if so see if it works there I had a similar problem and it was my video card and it was only a year old. If you go into safe mode it shouldnt load the card that would tell you something.
I still have the old graphics card in there. It is a pathetic one though. I will try using safe mode and if I can, fix the problem there. If not I will put an other graphics card in, Or i will cut the crap and use linux

Amen brother, amen. As D14852001neko said before, I would suggest using knoppix or another linux LiveCD distro if you cant solve the problem by reformatting and reinstalling a couple of times. Knoppix and Morphix have both got me through a lot. :cool:
You also may want to consider dual-booting Linux and Windows XP if you ever get your computer running comfortably. I have Mandrake Linux 10.0 and XP dual-booted with GRUB as my bootloader. I will never go back to just windows.
