How many have a PC DVD burner or CD burner ? Vote please

If you have a PC DVD burner :

What brand-model ,how old and what did you pay for it ?

I have a cheapo CDRW but its great!

Its a Lite-on 24x10x40 and for £20?

Works like a charm for me. I'm not really intrested in the DVD scene yet, i wouldnt really use DVD's much, Maybe when DVD's become more common towards the PC / Mac scene I'll get one.

i'd get a dvd burner if i had the $, plus im gonna wait to see which format wins out. I dont want to pay 400 dollars and not be able to get disks, plus not have anyone be able to read them. Also, they're not fast enough yet (4x?). My dad has been talking about getting a new iMac w/ superdrive and putting our VHS tapes onto cds, hopefully he will give me his bubble mac if he does

I think a 1x DVD speed is comparable to a 10-12x CDR speed. Much of the speed rating is meaningless in the CD burners because it is not sustained speed but microseconds attained speed. Anything beyond a 24x CDR speed has little if any meaning.

Yeah, the rate isnt the same between dvd/cd.

I thought it was 4x CDRW : 1x DVD, but I could be wrong.

Though I had a 24x CD Burner and I now have a 48x burner and it really does burn at twice the speed, even w/ closing/slow down, etc.

Actually I've been around this board in and out since c. '96-98 not as stated on the member data. I cannot recall the date but it's been several years. If I could remember the date I would not be a Senior. Don't matter anyhooooo!

I got a DVD burner 8-10mo. ago and I love it. I backup Data (programs), backup DVDs (hummm?!), home made movies on DVDs, and MP3s - music and radio shows. I can burn DVD+R/+RW, CD-R, CD-RWs

Luuuuuve it. Encoding movies to MPEG2 is time consuming but doing DVD backups is not ('cause it's already encoded). You can now buy a DVD player that will play MP3s burned on a DVD . :rolleyes:

Converting to Mpeg-2 shouldnt be that hard. What program do you use? How fast is your processor? I assume it is fast, considering you are a "videoman".

2Ghz P4, 512Mb RAMBUS,ASUS motherboard. Yes MPEG2 does take many hours to encode. Some progs. do realtime now but not great quality, a couple do direct to DVD burning.

Commercial DVDs (movies) are not burned but stamped out with the pits and bumps. The first DVDs available outside the movie industry were you could actually burn your movies or data were know as DVD-RAM. The RAM means that you can jump to any part of the video or data and edit (random access). The problem with DVD-RAM is that they cannot be played back on a standard DVD player but must be played on a PC with a PC-DVD-RAM drive or a special setop TV DVD-RAM player (Panasocic). Many professional baseball and american-football teams use DVD-RAM Server Farms to record player performance during games. Some have on the fly access to video dating back a few years catalogued by player, game, type of play.

DVD-R and DVD+R can be played on the majority of the standard DVD players 90%. Discs of DVD-RW or DVD+RW can be played on many or most players that are 6 month old.

Wow, we have very similar computers. I guess we have different patience levels. The compression speed seems fast for me. You probobly work w/ bigger video though. Then again, I dont have a job, so my time isnt very valuable. Hey, video encoding beats Soccer (dont get me started on sports).

That's because you don't understand the complicated rules of putting the ball on the net. I guess you probably find cricket lasting 2-3 days more exciting ? or maybe you like watching grass grow ?

Given the poll above it seems most Aqua-Members are Luddites.
