[Help] USB Problems

I have been having problems with my USB plugs recently

whenever I put something in (plug n play) Windows never detects it... This includes my USB stick, iPAQ Cradle, Media Card Reader, etc. It seems to dect the USB modem though...

If I use the add new hardware wizard, it still won't work...

Thanks if you can help

PS: Please dont say switch to a mac... I am getting there.

it's possible that the usb drivers are corrupted. uninstall all the usb stuff from device manager, reboot, and let windows reinstall them. good luck!

I dont know if it would be the drivers being corrupt, because I have two copies of XP on this computer. 1 Aquafied and one Lunafied (ewwwww......) . If thwe drivers where corrupt wouldn't it be on just one OS or could it be a coincidence that they both buggered up at the same time?

what's the status of plug and play service?

start-run-services.msc to see. it should be on and set to automatic.

(you didn't say which OS you're using so i am guessing it's xp or 2000)

ah, well, in that case...

yeah, that would be a coincidence. but perhaps, not as big a coincidence as you might at first think. if you've plugged in a usb device that is not compatible with xp (i've seen some travel mice like this), xp could get flustered trying to install the driver. then, when you reboot into your other xp, same thing. now you've hosed the usb drivers on both installations.

now having said that, a more likely scenario is that something's going on with your mobo. check the bios to make sure that usb (and usb legacy) is still enabled. then try plugging one of the devices into the usb port that you know work: the port where the modem is. if the device works there, sounds like a bad mobo. if it doesn't, try the drivers thing i first suggested.

good luck!

First of all, sorry if this is considered bumping or spamming, but I just forgot to read this topic. anyway,

The last thing I ever used was my iPAQ's cradle (handheld computer cradle)

Do you think the computer could have got all confused with it or sumthin? I have got activesync installed which is what you require to use the cradle. I think I might send the iPAQ back to HP and get it replaced because it has just stuffed up for no reason 3 times now. I am getting furious. Now the camera that I bought with it stopped working too.

I think the cradle somehow confused the system and disabled the USB drives. I lost my copy of Knoppix so I cant test it with that, unless I get a new one... Anyway, thanks for teh advice.
