[Help]Shading in photoshop

I'm working on some icons, but I am having a lot of trouble getting the shading right on the harddrive icons. I was wondering if someone could help me get it right.

This is the shading I am talking about:

Anyway, if anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it.

Thanks guys and gals.

If it is only on one side, you could try applying a gradient adjustment layer. I've been using that adj. layer for a lot of shading lately, gives you alot of control. Just keep playing with different values until it looks right. :shrugs:

Sometimes I give up on relying on Photoshop for my gradients and whip out the PaintBrush with AirBrush and do it manually - then use gaussian blur to smooth it all out. Just another option for ya :D

[edit] I've just thought - do you mean the colourisation of the gradient? If so you might want to try using some of the layer adjustments as mentioned above /

Oh, just hit the little X in the top right hand corner of your screen... that always worked for me.

Actually, by the way you're making that particular icon, it's choppy because of the angle it's at. This happened to me alot, which is when I resorted to manual shading like Tricky suggested. You'll figure it out, no problem.
