no no no!!! that is byfar the ****iest forum i have ever used, i mean applying skins is a pain in the ass, all the panel's suck ass, and overall it just plain sucks
Simple Machines is the best free one you can get and its very customizable
IPB v1.3.1 Final is the best one.
Since I've been using it on AL, it did not occur to me to move to another engine.
But it's not for distribution anymore...
Others are not a patch on it.

if you're gonna switch to a better forum, and espesially if you're gonna pay for it, just get vbulletin, out of all hte forums i've used, its the most powerful and easiest to use

Why do you come here and ask for help if you dont want to pay attention to peoples opinion.
Next time use Google, or pay attention. Freeware is sometimes (not all the time) better than payware. Look at AveDesk and all the FREE support you get here at the forums. 
Look at all those other freeware applications you get here and look at the support. If you are going to be running a bussiness or any other type of website that you PLAN to make money off. Open Source/freeware is the best there is. Imagine all the money you'll save. IPB requires licences witch costs money. Upgrades are not free. If you site is new chances are you wont get lots of many at all. You need to save were you can. A forum is nothing fancy. PhpBB is perfectly good.
Sorry for me getting all hype, but if you search the forums for babypapichulo you'll see that I used to think the same way and it pisses me off the same way Sid used to get irritated with crap I used to say. (sorry man you were right)
Pick up a Linux magazine and Learn something. In the future you'd want to switch to a free board.
I mean what is the reson you want to use IBP anyway? The smiles? The defualt skin? I understand it has a good skinning engine. But there are mods for phpbb and Are you going to use the defualt skin in any board? 
Custom is best.

If you're still looking for a free board, I would recommend phpBB to start off with. It really has some great Mac-esque skins (check www.politicalcrossfire.com) and it's pretty easy to use. Good luck
