Nice to see that they up'd the speed on the SuperDrives.
They still have to solve the heat issue before we will see a G5 based PowerBook.
iBook's and PowerBook's typicaly dissipate the CPU's heat up through the keyboard.
G5's put off a lot of heat so it would be somewhat uncomfortable to use with all that heat coming up.
They may have to... heaven forbid... put a FAN in the thing and route the flow out the back of the laptop.

also, putting 100gb on the 12 inch powerbook still makes the price around 12000 HK, which compares to a cheap 12 inch ultraportable notebook at 13000 Hk and up this is the cheapest ultraportable ultrapower notebook i have ever seen!

Yeah the powerbooks are tight. I always apple was CRAZY for putting 256mb ram in all of their machines... Even the huge powermacs come standard with 256mb. It's about time they have 512.
I too like the (very needed) default ram increase, they finally fell to their senses. Also, scrolling... ? could we expect scrolling mice in the future?

This may be incorrect but I heard (on macnn) that the 512mb of RAM consists of the built-in 256mb and another 256mb in the expansion slot, leaving you with a wasted 256mb stick if you decide to upgrade. I suppose you could ebay it.

the only thing i disliked about the new update is
they forgot the backlit keyboard for the cheaper notebooks,
two slot loaded 512 ram, (actually, it dosen't affect me, but to some 2 gb users),
no two buttons or scrool buttons,
nothing about improved heat dissipation or battery upgrade or some centrino technology-like
and some other things apple forgot to include.
but, it's better than the powerbooks they sell three days ago, so now apple's not outdated anymore

And the backlit keyboard is now available for 15 and 17 (it was only available for 15" with Superdrive in previous versions) hope that they will put backlit keyboard to the 12" G5 as well :P

They didn't "forget" to put stuff in.
• There's no backlit keyboard on the 12" because either a) there's not enough room or 
they want to differenciate between the 12" and the 15"/17".
• Apple has never made a two buttoned mouse, so why should they do a two buttoned laptop? And they do scroll, read the information on the new track-pads.

well just cause you felt so disapointed by the updates, i called Steve (or Steve Jobs for puny mortals) and gave him a scrub of his life. he was so ashamed for not listening to you that he at one point, even cried.
So the next PB will be called SteelFist to honour you and to remind Apple of the shame they did.
It will have hexa, yes HEXA G10s (featuring the new Steelfistino power saving technology ), 3D screens, AND up to 20TB of DDR8 RAM in 20 (yes 20!) memory slots, Ati Gaziradeon with 8GB of RAM and will cost just $10!
Steve felt so bad that he wanted to give them out for free but i reminded him that he DOES need a new Gulfstream jet soon
Also to make up for the injustice they did to you, they are going to put laser powered keyboard in the 12" (even though it`s not physically possible, but hell, if they can`t break current tech limitations for their (not even) customers, why do it at all?
Bottom line, Apple is trying to balance what MAJORITY of the users want and in my humble opinion, they did they job well with the current (G4!) PowerBooks. And you should read more about PBs (use your brain) before you whine about how big, bad Apple didn`t put a lighted kb in the 12"er and how they didn`t put the stuff u wanted (what did u want more? a cappuccino machine?

battery life in powerbooks is unbelieveable... i have a 15 inch 1.5ghz powerbook and i can have it up with wifi running and ichat for a good 4 hours!
and for saying that apple is outdated and being this stupid... you dont deserve an apple, especially one with a blacklit keyboard... tape a flashlight to your head

1. Two buttons on a mac is amazingly handy. I use my logitech MX900 ALL the time.
2. Battery life is average. I have a 15" PB too, I've never had more than 3 hours.

I went to the store today; nothing special. A lot of people in the line though. Saw some Brits with iPods in their hands
I tried the mini; wasn't impressed quite frankly. Although small and cute, it lacks power. I know its roughly the same as an iBook, but when you buy a desktop, its gotta be a bit more faster than a laptop; this one isn't. It isn't for me, I'm not gonna get it, but a cool one for beginners I guess.
I played with the PowerBooks a bit; the scrolling feature is cool but I didn't notice any performance increase. Maybe it was just me. I don't know.
p.s. tide, why don't you chill a little? different people have different opinions/needs and not everyone is in love with PowerBooks. take it easy.

and for ludge, i could see the idea of using a 2 button mouse when your into video or audio editing but not buying a new powerbook because theres no scroll button makes as much sense as uhh... blowing a goat?

@1. Only for people who use their macs more often and because of poor software: You shouldn't HAVE to right-click for an option, there should either be a button, menu-item or short-cut to it. That said, I use a (*Shudder*) Microsoft wireless mouse because it's more productive. The average user doesn't need to buttons in OS X (and by average I mean people who check their mail and browse the web like once a day for a short while, not people on this forum ).

It's a $500 Mac. Geeze. And it's not the same as the iBook, it's logic-board is closest to the eMac. If you want a fast desktop, you're either going to get an iMac and a Power Mac if need be.. NOT the lowest end Mac they sell.

I'm pretty sure they have different firmware. I remember a friend telling me earlier that 3rd party sites have that firmware, but it's not as reliable as Apple.
(If it is firmware for sure, Apple should release it >.<)
