WinFX 100% CPU

Hey all!

I've got a little problem with my WindowFX 2.11. When I start it up the cpu utilisation runs up to 100 % and the whole system becomes laggy.... I also tried the 2.12 Trial - same problem.

I didn't get any help at the stardock newsgroups :(

The interesting thing is, that the animations are working without any problems inside of the winfx config-dialogue - but not on any apps etc.

My System:

AMD Athlon 64 3400+

1 GB RAM

ATI Radeon 9800 SE - running on Catalyst 4.7 (already tried 4.12 etc - no result)

WinXP Pro SP2

Thanks for any help :)

I only use WindowFX for shadow effects.

Resources: 704kb & 0% CPU.

What happens if you turn every effect off,

start with solely shadows turned on (like I have)

and than graduadely turn on more effects?

Is there a difference in CPU usage.

From WindowFX FAQ

How can I make WindowFX work faster? A lot of new users will turn on every effect available in WindowFX and then find it slows down their system. For most users, they will have to make a choice between having light sources or transitions or shadows. The GPU cost of each of these adds up quickly. If you want shadows, you should probably not use transitions on minimize and maximize. You can also adjust the time transitions are allowed. Longer transition times look nicer but may interfere with PC productivity.

I have nearly the same specs, so wFX shouldn't be a problem on your

rig.

Doesn't work with only shadows - there is also the same problem :(

The usage bounces up to 100 directly after loading wfx.

Are you using the newest version (v. 1.12)?

This is a weird problem. Are your Ati Catalyst drivers up to date?

Are your problems only with windowFX? Try re-installing the app.

I'm currently using 2.11, but already tried 2.12 - no success.

I've also tried different Catalysts - no sucess.

It might be, that WinFX doesn't like the XP SP2 vs. Radeon 9800 combination.

I'm on xp sp2 with a radeon 9800 pro using the 2nd last version of the Omega Drivers (i'd guess the newest omegas don't have any problem but i just haven't bothered to update) and i don't have that problem with winfx.

Did you let winfx enable that desktop alpha blending thing when it asked on install? If not, maybe that has to do with gpu acceleration, and its being offloaded to your cpu.

I'll try it :)

Turn off any other applications before turning on winfx. Ive seen winfx interfere with programs that use alpha transparency or fading effects strange skinning and things like that. So make sure you do that.

i got a 64 bit amd prossesor too, it jumps up too 100% here too. im guessing somthing to do with the prossesor

winxp pro sp2

amd athlon 64 3000+

1 gig ram

geforce fx 5200 (128 mb)

I also thought about the processor. I have already tried to switch off cool and quiet, but als: no positiv result :(

Well.. I think we'll have to wait for WinFX 3 ;)

I also thought about the processor.

Really? Well, I'm sure my rig contains an AMD Athlon 64 3500+

and as I mentioned earlier, I have trouble with WindowFX (v. 2.12).

So, the CPU couldn't be the source of your trouble.

But wait, have you installed the Cool 'n' Quiet driver for A64 properly, because it should tune down your CPU usage...

Well.. I think we'll have to wait for WinFX 3 ;)

Yeah, Wfx 2.12 is from 2002...it's about time for an update by stardock. Surely all those next-gen GPU can be utimllised for some pretty hefty new FX's.
