I have a laptop running the Windows XP OS. Recently I purchased a 19 inch flat panel monitor and I am now using the LCD monitor in leiu of the laptop one. I am encountering only one problem:
When I close the laptop's monitor the computer goes on sleep. Is there a setting which I can change, which when the laptop screen closes, the laptop does not go to sleep? If so, would it be possible for the laptop to go to sleep after 1 hour if no activity is taking place on the computer?

What kind/brand of laptop.
You can usualy change what a laptop does when you close it.
Mine does nothing but blank the screen.
Some have this set in the bios, others do it via the Power Options control panel.

My laptop is Dell Inspiron 8500- the monitor is made by Princeton Digital.
Can you please me what setting I should change the settings on the Power Opitions screen? I tried changing the Home/Home Office Desk and changed the system standby to 1 hour, but it did not work.
in power options (maybe the advanced tab), there should be several drop-downs, one of them being "when i close my lid..." change that to "do nothing".

Also make sure the system is not set to stand by after a certain time (as lap tops are set to do)
Setting the power setting to Home/Home Office Desk, automaticaly disables all sleep features except for the monitor timeout. Set this to never just like the rest.
Also, if your laptop has a CPU that uses Intel Speed Step technology, this setting will force the CPU to run at full speed all the time. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. Dell laptops are notorious for overheating so use caution when making these adjustments.
I have been running my monitor for a couple of weeks now, on and off. Today, when I turned on the monitor it claims there is no signal or out of range. When I go to the settings (off of properties on the desktop) I realized that my 2nd montior, the new external one, was to the right of my default laptop monitor. So I dragged it to the left matching the physical position of my monitor, and everytime I open the window again, the physical position is changed to the incorrect physical setting. Can someone please tell me how to solve this problem?
P.S. I thought it might be helpful to know that the monitor involved is a Princeton LCD19 and I am running Win Xp Pro. The laptop involved is a Dell Inspiron 8500.
Update 1 Hour Later: I have managed to get the LCD monitor on, via the show desktop feature, but my monitor is just showing the desktop and not the applications I am using. Also, when I close my laptop monitor, the other monitor goes blank and displays the mssage 'no signal'
Issue now solved.
