Smootstripes For Gnome2
once you've extracted the theme from the archive you put it in the .themes folder in your home.
Its hidden so you'll need to type it into the address bar.
You should end up with this:
/home/taha/.themes/SmootS/metacity-1
You're using the most recent mandrake aren't you?
in the start menu go to configuration>gnome then click on theme.
Then click to view the current theme's details,
go on the window border tab and select smootS.
You can also use the install theme options there if you don't want to move the theme about manually.

I must be doing something wrong.. 
Well, I extracted the .tar file and I get a folder and INSIDE the folder is another folder called Metacity.
So, my questions:
What do I copy to the /.theme folder? The entire folder, the metacity folder, the .xml file?
When I am in the theme chager app, and I have to select a theme and browse for one, what exactly am I looking for? I mean what kind of file format? .xml? the folder? The .tar file?

taha, to make this alot easier on you, open the theme changer app, and make sure you are in the window decoration view, then drag the .tar smoots file over to it and drop it, it will ask if you wanna install that theme, click ok. then it will appear in one of the themes available and cilck it, and its activated

anyways.. have you tried dragging the tar file into the window decoration view like Meloncully said?
i havnt used gnome in ages... but i thought i also remember seeing a browse button.. heh i may be mistaken but yo ucould browse for the file to install...

yeah.. I tried that, but I dont know what to select in the browse window, I mean what type of file.
Anyway, you said you don't use Gnome. What do you use?
Edit: I would be sooooo greatful if someone could tell me exactly, step by step, how to install the Alloy theme..

well, depends on the mood.. what i love about linux is the different GUI thingies i can have... sometimes ill be in KDE.. or sometimes ill be in a window manager like Fluxbox or iceWM..... I tried gnome at 1.4.. didnt like it that much.. i have tried gnome at 2.0.. and i must say i am impressed it feels..... Full.. in away .. feels stable and professional... i may install 2.0 again on my system.. its neat

well.. its a gzip file, not tar. So is it different for it, perhaps?
Also, is the tar/gzip file supposed to be in the /.themes folder, or will the resulting file be created there?

Try 2.2. Not many new features, but its MUCH MUCH more stable and faster. the 2.0 release was kind of clunky.
It shouldnt be gziped. The file I downloaded was just .tar . It wasn't compressed at all.
thats odd that its gzipped. whenever i download a theme, its usually a tar.gz or its a tar. and it should work to just drag the tar file into the decoration window and then click install. are you doing all this on VPC? that sux if so 
but, since you are a mac user, if you wanna make your max/min/close windows like a mac's, go into terminal, and type "gconf-editor" and it will open a thing liike the windows reg, browse to applications>metacity>general then under button order or something, just look on the right for "menu:max,min,close" or something similar, click in their box, and change it to "close,min,max:menu" and voila! u have a mac button order
but, try to make it a tar. or a tar.gz. and to install that alloy thing, just download it to your desktop (/home/taha(or whatever ur user name is)/.gnome-desktop/) and open the theme changer/selector, and drag the file into the window decorations window. and it iwll ask where its located, and it will already be pointed to the file, and hit install. then click the decorations. IT SHOULD WORK. works for me.

Ok clicked on your link
downloaded to some random folder
Goes to that folder and finds "MCity-Dirt-Bag-0.5.tar.gz"
doubles click on it
presses on extract button
then presses on ok
There is now a dirt_bag folder in the same folder as "MCity-Dirt-Bag-0.5.tar.gz"
In a separate nautilus window go to ~/.themes/
and drag the folder dirt_bag into .themes
Now if you try to try to change the metacity theme it should be there
I'm sorry you've had so much trouble with this, i know how frustrating it gets. I think the "install theme" thing doesn't work cause the author hasn't used the standard file layout in his theme.

I try to follow the instructions, but it just won't compile 
I think this theme might go nicely with RoberTo's metacity theme until he releases the GTK theme he's working on, but i can't find out cause it won't work.
If anyones ever got it to work, please could you tell me how
